Dumb question... where do you lay the stinger down

So, I'm new-ish to welding. Did some mig and tig welding for the AISC steel bridge competition in college, and now went out and got a cheapie inverter stick machine.

When welding on a steel welding table, where do you lay down the stinger (with rod) in between welds? Even if only the work piece is grounded, I'm sure on a steel table there will likely be enough contact to close the circuit and cause inadvertent arcs.

Any slick ideas for holders like I've seen for tig torches and mig guns?

Thanks,
Don

1. Weld a steel "loop" to the edge of the table and hang the stinger (by the insulated spring-loaded lever) from the loop.
2. Lay the stinger down on the edge of the table with the stick poking off into space.
3. Lay the stinger down on the floor.
4. Pull the stick and don't worry about it.
5. Wait until you're ready to put a new stick in and don't worry about it.
6. Turn off the welder if you're not going to be welding for a while and don't worry about it.

Yep, just hang it by the lever somewhere. For me, that's usually on the edge of the welding cart.

On a steel table, I almost always pull the stick out and then just lay it down or hang it up.

After enough times that an accidental spark, or a burn from brushing against a still hot stick, you may end up doing the same.

When working on the floor or the ground, often I don't unclip the rod.

Good Question!
It all depends on location! Yesterday I was "Migging" & "Sticking" working on a BBQ Pit for the neighbor. Laying down doing some overhead horizontal welds with the Mig, I just lay the Gun on the steel floor while repositioning. The Stinger was dropped over a sheet of steel leaning against the table. When I went to Stick, I hung the Mig Gun & Ground over a plate leaning against the Weld table. When I was at rest, I draped the Stinger over the plate also.
If I had been working at the Weld table, then I would have hung the Stinger on an "S" hook. Occasionally while re-positioning I'll lay it on the table BUT as mentioned occasionally you end up brushing against the rod tip (burn) or bump it tipping it so the rod contacts the table or item.
Been known to hang it by the Clamp Handle on operations also.
