I just took the wire from the board relay to transformer and use power the new relay.

Then from off on switch add a new wire for new power supply for transformer to new relay then out to transformer.

I also have a duty cycle chart for welder on this post 📫

PS If not clear I will redo this post later.

Charl, its good to see you show up in this thread. I've gotten some good use out of the MIG-180. Again, thanks!

As for the wire feed, yes, its marginal especially considering the upgraded longer stinger length. HF apparently sized the feed motor just-good-enough for the shorter original stinger.

I use Flux Core exclusively (outdoor welding area). The feed wheel tension needed, was gouging the FC wire making it difficult to feed. I got a new feed wheel with better teeth and that generally evened out the feed speed. But it still wants the stinger laid out in a straight line to feed smoothly.

Here's the most recent thing I've welded with it, a hitch adapter. Power sufficient to dig into the 1.25" hitch bar. I've used this adapter several times now including bottoming it hard (without the cargo carrier attached), coming out of a gas station. The adapter is solid.

Dave , what I see is you ran a red wire from the com port on the board relay to the left side of new relay and another red wire from the N.O. port of board relay to the right side of new relay. The black wire goes from left side of new relay to where. Also the wire from transformer was plugged in where? also the black wire that's now connected to new relay on left side was connected where? Pictures...

Re: Update to my welder Harbor Freight 170

I have thinking of getting a longer gun.
I found the gun to 10 feet. Witch great for some type of work and putting a external 30 pound roll.

But most work today is bench type welding and 10 pounds is almost same as 30 pound roll cost per pound.

You are beating a dead horse trying to get anything useful out of smithdoor.

Check out any of the other 900 threads that he posts on daily.

A good percentage of the members here are basically fed up with his babbling / incoherent nonsense.

And I agree, Whatever he is smoking I wouldn't touch it with a 10 foot pole

Re: Update to my welder Harbor Freight 170

I aways look at how built and see there a week point.
My equipment had to work ever time.
There are some here that buy a welder like cell phone and do not care. They also well read the ads and youtube and believe all the data. I do testing to find out

For your information I have never smoke any thing.

Just a reminder, he has had a brain injury of some type - does the best he can I imagine.

I suspected that was the case.
Probably cooked his brain through chemo and/or radiation.

While I have empathy for his situation,
It is still not an excuse to allow him to infiltrate the board on a daily basis with bad information and constant nonsensical arguments.

A lot of new welders come to this board seeking quality information and advice.
Smithdoor routinely pisses all over that opportunity.

I believe it's the moderator/administrators Job to take care of the situation.
By your own admission he has brain damage.

So why is a person who is obviously not in the right state of mind allowed to continue in this fashion?

If it was just John T complaining, I could see the hesitation

    But it's not.

Many have complained about his actions and disregard for simple reasoning.

Re: Update to my welder Harbor Freight 170

You can see the different in the two relays in photos.
My experience is from being welding close to 60 years. Still see same mistakes that I made back in 1960's on YouTube.
When I started on very large shops had MIG.
Tig was a dream for most do to cost. Fuxcore is still being played with and limited to large plates.

I have been on off chemo since 2009 with stage 4 colon cancer.
Also had scaffolding brake 18 feet off ground.

This amateur has learned a lot from Smithdoor, that explains the design considerations behind the extensive mods I found in the HF welder I bought used. The diagrams and their explanation earlier in this thread are one example of what I'm talking about.

    Here a close up photos.
The 1 Orange typing shows a brown wire from switch to relay contact.
The 2 light red. Typing shows the brown and white wire from relay contact (brown) to Transformer (white).

My relay was 120 volt coil I had shelf and did the way dryers use 120v used the ground for 120 volts. This not to code but saved money on a new relay.
If look photo you see a [GREEN] wire going to coil. The other side coil is coming from the old relay use as pilot relay

    Whatever, I've said my peace.
