Howdy Motolife313, I repair Cast aluminum valve bodies on occasion, and as with all welding procedures that the Company I work for requires me to use, I have to use a gas lens and I have to brush clean between passes. rarely do I see a brand new Aluminum body that is made from sheet metal or round bar because the valve industry has really centered the product line to 9 1/4 and 2 1/4 Chromes, 316L,H and 17-4PH here @Emerson/Fisher, but like I said, most of the procedures I am required to use call for brushing between each pass no matter what the material is. Even hardfacing alloy 6. but I agreewith you, on a 4043 fuel tank or a toolbox, it would be a eye sore to see the dulled finish from brushing.

Make sure to knock the joint with a dedicated brush that's for Aluminum After EVERY SINGLE bead. I also use a gas lens for pretty much everything, I like a #12 Cup on All pipe applications, and a #8 cup for Aluminum, with 3/8 stick-out on the tungsten, I only weld Aluminum with Helium. If your machine is a 165, helium would give you surprisingly more arc penetration than Argon could even dream of.
I can take the filler 6" out of the gas zone and don't have an issue when I go to add filler. It is the angle of the dangle here.

I was actually putting it behind my back...
    Between each dip...
    At a class...
    And everyone saw it...

And could not tell the difference.
