Exclamation Obnoxious Pop-ups Possible Bad Advertiser

    Forum staff,

When visiting WeldingWeb lately I have been occasionally getting an obnoxious string of Pop-up Advertisements. The first of which is usually “Amazon Rewards” or something similiar. To be clear this issue is not on my side. I’m fairly literate when it comes to computer tech, and well versed in protecting my computer and devices from infection.

The issue seems to be a “Forced Redirect” probably originating from one of your advertisers, and is embedded in the JavaScript of their ads. Note:that pop up/content blockers are ineffective at stopping this malicious activity, so that’s not a solution. It needs to be stomped out at it’s source. The problem seems to have arisen just recently, so look at any new advertisers you might have just added.

Edit to Add: The problem is prevalent on both of my IOS devices(IPad, and IPhone) using the Safari Web browser, and also appears on my Windows 10 Desktop PC using the google chrome Browser.

More information can be found here: https://mashable.com/2018/04/03/cong.../#NgjFPcQ3eGqR

If I can isolate which ads might be triggering this problem, I will come back and update this thread.

Hope this can be sorted as it’s extremely irritating.

Click the ad and cost the advertiser money.

As per my first post, does not work. I use a very good ad blocker that blocks pop-ups as well as all manner of ads. Most web browsers have a built in ad-blocker by default. The ads are embedded in the webpage, they run a script that redirects your browser to the ad webpage. They don’t pop-up in the traditional sense that they open the ad in a new window. They turn the window you’re browsing with into ad, and then open a string of new tabs with other intrusive ads.

Happened to me yesterday as well. Did not even have to log in - as soon as the WW screen came up the redirect occurred.

No issues here on iOS or Windows using Firefox with standard ad block software. Checked in safari on iOS and have no issues there either. I assume you have done a full virus and spyware check on your systems? Maybe I’ve not hit the problematic ad yet either.

When I first encountered the issue, yes did a virus screen, no issues found. Problem only occurs on this website intermittently, presumably when the offending ad loads onto the webpage. Sometimes it will happen 2 or three times in a row, other times I can browse through the forums for 45+ minutes and not encounter it.(Admittedly I spend blocks of that time reading singular threads so the ad roll doesn’t have as many opportunities to refresh, and reload)

Re: Obnoxious Pop-ups Possible Bad Advertiser

I'm running Firefox and Ad Blocker Plus so I haven't seen this. BUT for sites that I don't want to see, I always block them in the Hosts file and then it's impossible for my browser to connect to their site. Besides not seeing their carp ads, that blocks the installation of those search re-directors, shopping "assistants", spyware and a host of other nasties that they try to install.

Tip: You have to run Edit as an administrator in order for it to be able to save changes to the Hosts file in Vista and the later versions of Windows.

I haven't seen this either but I never EVER click on ANY ad.
If I see anything interesting I open a new window and go directly to that website.

It doesn't happen all the time. Had 1 yesterday and when I just opened this thread 1 popped up. Closed it and reopened it the popup was gone.

I don't have any of the issues you've mentioned, using Firefox.

    However...

In the past I was getting hammered with "adware". This is what you're dealing with.

Took me several weeks, but I finally figured out that the adware was caused by an app I downloaded from Google play. It was a simple weather app, by weatherbug. Nothing was stopping the pop ups, until I deleted the weatherbug app.

    Nothing since

Would one of you computer X Spertz just mark it up with a soapstone so Zap can find it and cut it away?

That's because the app reloaded the adware every time that you ran it. A lot of the spyware/adware/viruses do that so even if you delete them, they get reinstalled every time that you reboot the computer or re-run that app (or the infected Windows driver). That's why I try to find the home site that they're using and then add it to the Hosts list. Then it can never reload the virus/adware/spyware.

Re: Obnoxious Pop-ups Possible Bad Advertiser

I’ve been getting this same Amazon Reward ad on my iPhone for several days, only on WeldingWeb.com. It is intermittent and seems to only happen when reading New Threads.

I have to close my browser and wait before coming back to the forum.

I hope you can identify and clean it up.

    Thank you.

I keep getting the dambed Amazon pop up also. If I click the back button enough times I get this one. The more I click back button the more "interesting" the ads get. Ya know, if you're into that sorta thing.

I agree completely. Since I've deleted all the weather apps I downloaded, I haven't had any recurrent ads like the others are having. I do, however have that damn bloatware emergency alert return when I reboot my phone on and off. Unfortunately, I can't delete it, or disable it, I can only temporarily stop its function.

Manufacturer shoul not be allowed to deny us to disable apps on our phones.

Care to elaborate on your " finding the host" process?

Don't click on back button. Goto screen manager, and "x" it out. Close out the Windows, then re open new.

You will need to delete the cause of the adware to stop it
