Learning to weld.

Saturday my 19-year old grandson ask me if I would teach him how to weld. This morning I started him out with some 6010 on the Everlast PowerArc 200ST. He was having trouble getting the rod to start. So, I switched him over to the Lincoln V350-Pro, with hot start. That really helped him with starting the rod. He played with some fillet welds in the flat position. Then I had him try some 1/8-inch 7018. The first picture is one of his first welds with 7018. 2 1/2-hours latter the second picture is what he did with 7018!

many inverters 6010 is harder to start if amps are not in a certain range for example
normally
1/8 6010 about 70-130 amps
but with some inverters works better at
70-100 amps as if more amps arc starts to sputter or be unstable

i have seen this on more than one inverter not sure why they do that

It floored me when he ask me to teach him how to weld. I wonder what he will do when he gets burned!

Lasted longer than 1 I can think of who spent 20 minutes with the hot glue gun, dropped it on the floor and walked out declaring he knew how to weld good enough.

Personally I think they should learn O/A first.

After the first day of this, does he seem to want to come back for more? For just a hobbiest instructor teaching him, he looks like he is picking it up pretty good. No telling what he could do with a REAL weldor teaching him.

The last couple days, I’ve had the grandson working with 6010. Yesterday the light came on for him! This is what he did this morning! He is still having trouble starting the rod. Have the hot start set high to help him get the rod started.

I can believe it. Think eye hand coordination and it start's to make sense.

CEP Is that 5P+ he ran?

Yes, it is 5/32” 5P+ 6010. Today I had him try some 5/32” ESAB 10P 6010, just to see how different brands weld.

Is apprenticeship talked about?

I was telling him about some of the places I’ve welded. High in the air. His mother, my daughter told me this afternoon he is afraid of heights! She wants him to go to work in the local Navy shipyard. His dad is a rigging foreman at the local Trident Submarine base.

probably low on run voltage. increasing the amps drops the voltage just a bit. just enough that if you long arc it a fraction it will cut out.

Got the grandson to start on some vertical up hill with 7018 this morning.
1/8-inch 7018, 118-amps, 0.0 on the arc force, +10 on the hot start.

Kid is really starting to catch on to this vertical up hill welding with 7018!

He keeps coming back, that's a real good sign.

You're making a good investment in his education. He's getting a better education than most of the so called Welding Schools offer.

Switch him over to some O/A welding and see how he does.

Grandson is working with self shielded wire this week. This is .068” NR-212 vertical up hill. On 3/8-inch thick V-butt plate. I’m impressed!
