Depends on size in regards to thickness. I often cut 1/2" x3 or 4" upright. I wouldn't cut less than 1/4" thick upright unless I was ganging pieces together. Blocking up the fence side helps when cutting flat stock on the flat, as it allows less teeth in the cut when exiting the cut. More important to that is being able to properly secure your work, as any shifting can strip a blade in short order.
