    I'm considering the same unit.

Did you use a 40 amp breaker and 8 gauge wire? I'm wiring my new shop and I'm trying to get my ducks in a row.

Still pumping out the breeze! No issues with it. I used 4awg wire on a 60A breaker, about 10ft from breaker to mag starter. I wanted to minimize voltage drop and I didn't want to risk it popping the 40A breaker on start-up so that's why I used the 60A breaker. I thought it was enough air, but that was before I got my 3M Grinders. Now I have 3 additional 120V compressors wired up in parallel for a total of about ~ 53 CFM @ 90 psi on 138gal total volume capacity.

    Good deal! Thanks

It probably would trip up a 40 Its run is probably close to 50 It requires 6 wire and could be breakered up some if it had to.

    Oscar,
I have 5hp 2 stage (Italian pump) 80 gal tank now. Calculating CFM on my compressor, I get 14.78 CFM.
I use the formula: cfm = TANK GALLONS x .536 x PSIG divided by SECONDS
    Example: 80 gallon x .536 x 175 psi / 507 sec = 14.78 cfm (507 seconds is just under 8 and 1/2 minutes.)
This does not take temperature and other factors into account, but I feel it is in the ballpark, and not overly inflated (pun intended).
Would you time your compressor from zero to 175 (or your normal cut our pressure and let us know the CFM?
I am considering a compressor upgrade, and would like some real numbers to make a good decision on how to proceed.
    Thank you,
    Geoff

    3min 35 sec until it cuts off @ 175psi.

The race is on. 2yr old I/R (good shape, heated shop) 5 HP, 2 stage, Chinese pump, 80 gallon tank. 7 min 25 seconds to 160 psi. Damn.... I'm gonna need a hotter cam...
If I used the formula correctly, that puts me at 15.42 cfm. and Oscar at almost 35. Mine was rated for 15.6 at max. by the factory, so the numbers aren't horrible. Oscar's was 38. Interesting that the difference between the new Chinese pump and his older Italian pump is less than 1 cfm.

Thank you for the reply. Oscar, your compressor's cfm is amazing!
Would anyone else please give some input on their compressor?

Re: Eaton Compressor/Polar Air 10HP 80ga 2-stage single phase compressor

Well if the choice was 2 5's or 1 10HP, the one 10 seems to have the advantage, and I don't think anyone would call 2 of these running "quiet".
This one was on sale for around $1700 Cdn (you can probably find them around $1500 or less) but even at $3k for 2, that won't touch Oscar's sale price of $2500.

Re: Eaton Compressor/Polar Air 10HP 80ga 2-stage single phase compressor

For me it would be 2-4 because of rural lines and only need the second so rarely and at this point probably wouldnt bother wuith the second. I do like larger tank to spread out the recovery time. The thing about a 10 if you are somewhere with the real power is 2 fold, first, short recovery, while its loud its short for common work and 1 larger unit is simpler, gives enough without fussing around, makes enough to run tools straight away without tank.
The general rule is 4 cfm per hp 2 stage.

10 hp Curtis, pilots valve set up. I was hunting for a close up of valves and heads,,, there are some blanks go in place of the valves on heads for regular electric use.

I have a quick question,,,, when the number 4 was used what size ground wire did you use?

I used a 4awg ground because it was a 4/4 remnant I had gotten, so I already had it in the same sleeve.

The calculation seems pretty accurate. I think there are two ratings, where one is displacement-based, and the lower one is more of an effective/delivered rating kind of thing. In any event, it's pretty good for the price I paid.

That's a kickazzed setup man. Especially considering what you paid for it.

    I've got a Ingersoll Rand. 14hp Kohler engine. It puts out 24.5cfm @ 175psi.

They knocked off a couple bucks off the compressor. I called them up, spoke to Megan who is in charge of piston compressor sales, and she was nice enough to basically split the shipping. Otherwise it would have been closer to $3k.

For a "non hobby" guy ha,,, that unit would be a great 1 unit stop. Would body work 2 or 3 men easy not including simultaneously doing other work. It will provide for almost continious for 2 men body tools and recovery super fast, almost too much as a guy cant make it run continious under normal circumstances. This is for real work, not seeing how much air we can whiz thru it. .

Re: Eaton Compressor/Polar Air 10HP 80ga 2-stage single phase compressor

I use 3 hp and the rest is a slave or back up if i turn it on, but with 200 gallons i can work steady for 20 mi utes and with long cycle eaiser to "time" it to run continious. Only addition i might make, and that is a maybe if i was working 40 in my paint area is to carry a small line in to a gauge with hi pressure so i could see system locally, simply for operator timing allowing for resuming work before cut out. I do it from instinct but its a bit hard to train and explain. I have regulated circuit that feeds that stuff, not such a deal and does t matter much or i would have done it.
Big ole digital read can see from anywhere in shop would be ok too but not worth the install effort

Its 2 conductors and ground but,,,, it might call for it in pipe though. Oscar said he measured the run and do not recall what the plate said but technically a 10 hp would take a 4 if in a cable, in the real world it wont matter. That is a light 10, I think mathematically it works out to about 9 or so. Motor wire goes by hp and the chart was written when the voltage was 220. Millions of 5hp comps running from 10 cable and 30 breakers.

Re: Eaton Compressor/Polar Air 10HP 80ga 2-stage single phase compressor

The blue one in my pic I got with blown gasket, the electric is stuff I had, all old parts. I dont think I bought anything for it except a breaker which I stock anyway. It was plugged with auto body dust.
The breaker to it is off, turn it on if I sandblast. I keep the breaker off as my system is on 24/7, if something were to go south no point in having 2 units on and the 3 meets the demand with all the tanks.
Its my backup/demand unit, used it once as a main when I was busy and the little one needed a bearing and another when it needed a start cap. I have them valve isolated, can remove either with a pallet jack. They both go to the bottle receiver, works as a condensate tank and in one can see the scrap tubing used to connect the drains to a thru the wall hose.

Re: Eaton Compressor/Polar Air 10HP 80ga 2-stage single phase compressor

There is a t in there top of the receiver with short drop tube, one side goes toi the main manifold and the hose there goes to an outlet near my bench, can keep it live with the rest of it off. 200 gallons of tanks and 350 ft or so of pipe.
It works so well I am not gonna mess with it and "make it better" and if I did would simply make the main riser from a 2 inch vs the 3/4 I have, simply a condensate column but I really dont need it.
