    The nut was most likely so they could move whatever machine enough to take it apart, it didn't look like any attempt at a repair.

    Sure looks like the eye with the nut attached has been down this road before. Now you have moved the bar up by installing a nice repair. I wonder if pins/bushings/stops down the line are in any way responsible.
