I forgot the part numbers.
Upper motor pulley: 16006
Lower motor pulley: 16007
Since the lower pulley is the one no longer available, I'll bet it's the damaged one when I take it apart tonight.
On the school wood shop 15 inch, Craftsman, variable speed drill press.
Mod: 351.229350
Code: 200001
The motor pulley assembly is spring loaded to maintain correct tension for the variable pitch spindle pulley.
The upper and lower pulley have seized together and require a hammer to move.
I have taken it off and will take it apart at the home shop.
Any chance these clean up to where they function again?
(part is no longer available)
Thanks in advance
Dave J.

Sounds like it's similar to a snowmobile clutch and drive setup. Probably all scored up. May need to make up a bushing or a sleeve to get a new bearing surface.

Some new bushings and maybe a shaft should fix it if a clean and polish job doesn't. Had to go through that on my bandsaw. Not a big deal if you have a lathe handy.

Cool guys thanks, I'll post up the damage tomorrow

I was able to pound it apart with a wood mallet.
No bushing in it, just steel on steel.
Looked like galling was the problem.
Cleaned it, oiled it, spun them together to let them "seat" to each other and clean each other.
Put back together with some wheel bearing grease, works perfectly again

You didn't get out the mics or buy any fancy measuring tools? Not even a rant about poor fits from the factory?

Probably made in North America not in some offshore 'shop' :-)................MikeNot even a rant about poor fits from the factory?

Not the same but some have used these for variable speed change on a drill press, it uses 2 belts and the movement of the pulley position changes the speed. It is mounted to a lever and to change speed you push the lever back and forth.

John Deere used that on older garden tractors like a 214. Called it a varator.

some explanation
In this video you can see the center pulley changing to vary the speed
