    machine recommendations

im getting ready to buy new plasma cutter but looking for recommendations
i need to cut a wide range of thickness steel occasionally cut 1 " but more 1/2" range but occasionally very thin material on cnc table

my quiestion is , will a 65 handle my needs on the top and bottom range of materials, im somewhat limited on thinner because of feedrates on thinner materials.

    thanks

The 65 will edge cut 1 inch fine.. How much you are going to cut would be the issue.. Little bit now, and again is totally within the machine's capability. Low-end will be the same as a XP-45, but the 65 will way better on 1 inch stuff. 45 just runs out of arc length on a cnc table. It can do excellent cuts but a real PITA to do very much of it. Using 65 amp consumables will get you some super nice cuts on 1 inch MS with the 65 machine..

By the way, slow speed/ low amp setting will work well with either machine.

Question if you don't mind, will 45xp cut a 1.185" passably used manually on short runs or is that asking too much?

You are pushing it for quality. Sever yes. not that the sever would be as ugly as some.. Just the travel speed, and arc length would be so much better with 65 ..Sometimes more horsepower is a good thing.. I prefer my 60i for anything 1 inch and over compared to my 45XP.. Extra power just flat out helps..in some ways you are almost looking best with a 85. (IMO)

Bigger here is always better, but cost is also a huge deciding factor. 65 is essentially double the price of the 45xp. Thanks Brand X.

if price is the issue, get the new thermal dynamics 60iX model. It has 3/4 inch piercing and 1.5 inch sever capability. Under $2K

I don't know why anyone would use a torch if they have the right plasma. My torch has done nothing but heat things for bending, loosen rusted nuts and bolts, etc. for the last 30 years or so. Oxy-Fuel is no match for steel under about 1.5" unless your Powermax is too small. I am custom building a wood splitter for a local guy, just cut the ram plate out of 1" steel with 1/2" reinforcements. The 1" is mostly dross free and cut at 9 " per minute with a Powermax65 at 9" a minute. The heavy dross in a couple of spots knocks off with 2 or 3 light hammer taps, no grinding. The 1/2" was cut at 30 ipm, also at 65 amps. Cut on a 4 x 4 table that I have owned for over 16 years. Jim Colt Name: IMG_1555.jpg

sorry for the added pics. I cannot get them to rotate correctly....and everytime I try a different configuration....the pics show as another post! No method of deleting them it seems.
