Saw a guy get a broken jaw cutting 6" pipe, he pulled it up out of the trench with the crane on his truck and obviously didn't think it out.
I had to take a section out of a 24" line to install a gate valve on top of a hill once, expecting the same result we cribbed the pipe and held it down with 2 large excavators. We still had some movement, not much and the beveling rig rode it out just fine.

How does one cut a pipe like that safely with out having to worry about the built up spring in the pipe?

Big pipe like that can build up big forces as seen. The excavators was a good idea. You could also weld some serious threaded dogs over already cut sections to hold it with bolts and when fully cut wind the bolts out.

Actually on large bore pipe the best way is with a cutting rig, I have an H&M rig that crawls a band clamped to the pipe. It has a 15 foot flexible shaft with a crank to drive it (yeah, I'm cheap) but it's better than being on the pipe doing cutouts. I really like it for doing cuts on vertical pipe like well casing, have bands from 16" to 30".
