    New 4x6 bandsaw

I had to replace my bandsaw earlier this week, the bronze gear was worn out. I can't complain though, I bought the saw used about 40 years ago. It was an ENCO and did well. I bought a saw from HARBOR FREIGHT, checked it in the parking lot before I drove the 90 miles back home. I got it set up and got ready to "tune it up", surprisingly it cut within about 1/64th so I left it alone, checked the worm as has been suggested and it looked ok, so off to the races. I put a new bi-metal I-MACHINIST 10-/14 pitch blade on it and it cuts great.

My HF saw has been good too. Still on the same blade after a lot of cuts. I'm running at 80sfm to keep things a bit cooler. It's like watching paint dry, but there's always other things to do while the saw is doing its thing.

Only issue I had was the pulley cover vibrating, and making a ton of noise. Solved the issue with the farmers friend Wrapped a bungee cord around the thing, and presto...……..no more clattering.

Replaced the motor on my HF 4x6 after 10 years or so. I bought a $20 Craftsmansm table saw for the motor.

Mine had the hinge pin hole drilled crooked so it wouldn't cut square along that axis. Not noticeable cutting flat stock but pretty bad for anything else. The hinge is part of the casting for the HF model. I took it back after screwing with it for several hours. Otherwise it was decent.

Ended up with a used slightly larger Grizzly with hydraulic downfeed. It really comes in handy.

My original blade took a crap while I was checking the saw for cutting straight, didn't surprise me too much. The bi-metal will do great unless I do something stupid like cutting something too thin or starting the cut with the blade on the stock. I run on middle setting and it cuts fast and the bi-metal blades last good.

    Re: New 4x6 bandsaw

I've had no problems with my harbor freight bandsaw and it also needed just a hair of adjustment from the factory. I've been really happy with it and recommend it to anyone that asks. Don't forget to use coupons when shopping there - ww.hfqpdb.com - their app is great too, you can scan items to search for coupons and load a "list" of coupons for checkout. They just scan the coupon from your phone.

I use a layer of amazon purchased silicone "tape" wrap (the self bonding stretchy type) on the pulley covers as a gasket for a couple machines, though I've bungeed them before lol. I've seen some available in different colors now at home depot for a decent enough price, but I've never tried that brand.

Broke my first blade today on the little HF saw. Not too bad I guess. I think I bought it when I was trying to restore that old Clausing. That's a lotta cuts ago.

Ellis has a how to break in a blade IF you aren't aware. My 4x6 saw blades I buy From Farm and Fleet. $10.00, just a basic metal cutting blade. I buy real blades for my Ellis 1600.

The one that broke was the original blade that came with the saw.

I have absolutely no idea if it's a good blade, or not. Picked it up from HF when I bought the saw. Hell...….I'm not even sure I adjusted it right when I put it on Just kept tightening it until it quit popping off the guide wheels (shrug), then eased it back a bit. Seems to run ok

CAVEMAN, I recommend checking the gear oil in your new saw. Whenever I checked mine, it looked liked used Diesel engine oil with a couple tablespoons full of casting sand mixed in. The sand alone will wear that bronze gear out.

That's the first thing I did because of a video about the worm being like a razor, the oil was full and clean. I put some Teflon greas in the box of my old saw many years ago and it was still there and flowing well with the oil mixed with it, it was slick 50 #2 grease.

Apparently harbor freight now has a parts department, they have a list of things they carry parts for on the website with much more said to be coming. Might be an interesting source for hard to find parts for bandsaws, drill presses, etc.

HF is gunning hard to be the new sears, we'll see.

Sammm, after years in a machine shop I very much prefer a bi-metal, variable pitch blade, We had a bandsaw in the shop that took a 2inch x28 foot blade, that saw would cut within ,008 on a 14 inch diameter. I looked at those blades , HF wanted 27 bucks for a 64 1/2 inch bi-metal 10-14 pitch, I think I'm paying about 16 on Amazon for a bi-metal 10/14 by I-Machinist.
