Welder Review and Running Comments - Where Best to Post

Against many's advice I did buy a Yeswelder mig/tig/stick welder.

I wanted to do a "Noob" review on it and have a running commentary on pluses and minuses, Q&A, etc.

I promise not to take offense at the comments lol, and I assure you I'm not a spammer or yeswelder compensated.

If this idea is OK, where would you recommend putting a thread like this? Thx

In fact, why not just add your review to that thread, or doesn't that seem like a good place for you to review it? I don't know, I'm asking, you might have some earth breaking news to disclose to the welding world, so it might warrant a new thread. Not meaning to be offensive, so hope you don't take it that way...just asking.

I just want to be sure I'm not breaking or abusing forum rules. I didn't want to hijack the existing Yeswelder thread with a bunch of yammering from an amateur trying to learn the skill with a virtually unknown box. I sure won't be coming across as any kind of authority! I joined the forum recently to learn, ask questions, share projects (I am really into my yard art projects lately) and I search around looking for threads by other unskilled members to see what their experiences are. I'll probably just keep it in the existing thread - the OP seems to welcome any and all info about experiences with this brand.

You have NO Business offering a review on a welding machine for the simple fact that you Do NOT know how to weld properly.
The examples of your welding is horrible. Sorry if that ruffles your panties, but thats the truth.

You need to shut off the computer and spend some alone time with your new machine and practice.

While you are waiting for the new welder to arrive you can still practice with the machine you have.
Get a piece of steel that is somewhat within the limits of your machine.
Grind all mill scale from the practice piece.
Start laying or padding beads. Watch Jody and a few others on how to do this.
The first pic is typically what new people do when they practice. That is not stacking beads. Plus it is on a saw blade.
The second pic is what stacking beads or running stringers should look like.

Once you get the new machine, start the whole process over again.

When you ask for advice, show a pic of the weld plus the exact settings for wire, volts, amps, type of gas, flow rate, stick out or contact tip to work distance, etc.

I still make it a point to stack beds or practice since I dont weld every day. I also do a practice run on similar material before I do a real important project.

Maybe so, but I see yet another ambitious person wanting to share with the world as they actually learn to do something. I guess nothing wrong with that if that is what one likes. That's not the type of people I personally want to follow, as I stated above.

I'm certainly no expert and this is giving me some thought on what I should spend my time on and I think I should spend more time out welding than spending time on an online forum discussing it, so I'm going to try and do just that and focus more on the projects I have and better myself. Even if it's padding beads for an extra hour a day, at the end of a month I will be that much better. I don't feel I need to share that with people, most could care less what I'm welding, be it a welding cart, a driveway gate, etc...even padding beads...

That said, I think I'm gonna to go out and sharpen some tungsten and see if I can contaminate them. Maybe I should do a video on contaminating tungsten? That is something I would consider myself an expert at!

Not a lot of disagreement on my part to most of the posts - the unfortunate thing is it's obvious I torqued a few of the regulars in the other thread and they're so blinded by petty keyboard frustration that they aren't able to read what I wrote in my first two posts, or at least comprehend the simple words. That's why the ignore function on a forum is such a beautiful tool.

So as I sit in my spa with my cigar and my Guinness, concerned only for the aneurysms I seem to be causing the weak-minded, I'll try to clarify what 90% didn't read the first time...

Exactly, Amazon with the discount, then the 4 year warranty so if/when it craps out I have some recourse. Still under $400 all total. I'm ok with my current hood - it's my eyes that suck.

His intentions seem pretty clear to me. Especially since unit would appeal to new user, mostly. Unless the try to power it at 35 amp 120v.

Ran about 3lbs of wire this morning - started with Lincoln .030 flux core as it has always seemed very clean trustworthy in my machine anyways (HF 125 FCAW). Since the HF chart is woefully inaccurate, after a couple of horrid passes on HIGH with wire speed = "8" on 1/4" angle iron, I dropped the wire speed down to "4" and everything smoothed right out (except my sense of direction...).


(Citric acid works surprisingly well as an etching agent) The beads on the vertical leg seem passable, the ones across the bottom were run at the higher wire speed.

Some more beads, then screwed with the power and wire speed settings to remind me what the wrong ones feel/sound like.



Switched over to a roll of INE .030 when the Lincoln ran out - bought it to try because of all the glowing reviews...Man, this things hasn't sputtered and splatter like this since before I did the DCEN mod on it.

Penetration was OK, but man the clean-up after using it will/would be tedious. I tried different wire speeds, stick out lengths, power on hi and low - damned if I know why mine acted like this.



If I learned anything new today - it's that I need to glue a spotlight to my helmet...

Nice work practicing and padding beads. Once you get the new welder you should be able to adjust it better to reduce spatter.

Using gas will really help to reduce the spatter. There are benefits to either straight CO2 or C25. Whichever you choose, you will still need to dial in the settings for your welder.

Your practice also showed how the wire seems different depending upon the manufacturer and why it pays to sometimes spend a bit more for a better wire.
