You need a gen that can put out the required power demand that the welder requires to operate.
Do welding units, such as a Multimatic 220 AC/DC (PDF spec sheet), need a specific generator to power it? For example, does that unit require the Miller Bobcat 260 (PDF spec sheet)? Or can cheaper generators be used?

Look at the spec sheet. you need 31.3 amp of 230 volt power to operate at 200 amps. So you will need a generator that can supply that power all the time.
watch out for peak power ratings. a generator can only supply peak power for a very short time. Used to start up a electric motor .
welder can pull 7.5KW so a peak power 8KW generator may not have enough power.
Watch the sales gimmicks, read the spec sheets and pick a good generator that can put of the power you need all day long.
