I can get used to this
Things are getting a bit slow in the coal busness. Bein an election year and all that crap, til the money guys that buy and sell the coal figure out which politician they are gonna bribe, buy, and payoff after November. Happens evry time. So now for the very first time in my life I am workin 40 hours a week 5 days. Never in my life have I done that. This is work I do for Joe I am talkin about, there is a bit of other work Ive picked up on the side, but I have never worked 40 hour a week at a regular job even when I worked with my dad when I was 5 and 6 years old, I was with him evry day out in the bush workin at somethin 7 days a week mostly.
Wife tells me I always could and I know this. I just wanted to get the job done so they could have it up and runnin Monday morning, the money didn't matter. so she says they been askin about you up at the church a lot. I said Im sure they do, and you know what happened the last few times I went and it still continues. I have a lot of gas in my guts the last 5 or 6 years, why I don't know, and I get coughing fits from smokin since im 13 years old, and I fall asleep a lot. Those folks in church don't need to hear and smell my farts, and listen to my coughing and sneezing, and Todd, our minister don't need to see me sleepin while he is teachin, its all just rude and inconsiderate. So I wake up anyway at 3 am most mornings and I will read my Bible and have my own devotions and then go out and tinker with somethin on Sunday.
But like I said I can get used to this lazy life I am startin to live right now.

I can relate to this.
I worked a minimum of 60 hours a week or more for 20 years.... for the last 10 years it's been 50 hours....
Yeah... a 40 hour week would pretty much be part time.
sat/sunday mornings I'm up before the sunrise.
I make the sign of the cross when I pass the church......

Re: I can get used to this
Yup getting back home at 4 is definitely different, shucks even the little side jobs I pick up Im usually home before sundown lately. Sometimes believe it or not I actually feel guilty and lazy not bein out there bustin my balls all day and night. I guess it just goes back to the way I was brought up, my dad always used to say when there work to be done you work. Thing about that is he would create work for me just to keep me out of trouble, I was one of those type of kids.
I used to love Sunday morning church when I would go regular, I just don't wanna embarrass my wife kids and myself with all the noise I would make. so I study the Bible at home Sunday morning

Re: I can get used to this
47 million people lost their jobs. You should just enjoy what you got. I've been laid off since February 20, but the unemployment is not too shabby. Soon to be cut back, though.

Re: I can get used to this
Glad I chose the route I chose. I been "working from home" (aka on vacation) since mid-March until Aug 1st. Full salary every month. Goes to show what a little piece of paper can do.

I am very thankful to have as much work as I have...I always was and never complained about having too much work. I consider myself lucky and very blessed to have the 40 hours a week plus the little side jobs and the bigger side jobs that come along on occasion.
I wasn't complaining about not having 60 and 70 hours of work like I been used to, I was just stating that I could get used to the time to myself and with my famly.
I cant collect unemployment, being self employed I don't have to pay into it, and I don't, I put some back out of evry check, and I haven't had to use any of it it yet as I am still workin.
Sorry if I came off like I was complaining in the original writeup, and I hope things pick up for you

Little piece of paper? I guess you talkin about a degree of some sort, good for you, I had that opportunity once upon a time, I turned it down...the field they picked for me I had no intrest in and still don't to this day. I don't regret it a bit, my dad said I would but in this case he was wrong

I didn't take it that way, either. Enjoy your extra time with your family.
I kind of feel lately like I've been prematurely retired by Covid-19.

Re: I can get used to this
I really don't think the virus thing has anything to do with the coal busness slowdown, we were determined to be an essential industry the day that PA was shutdown. I think its the election year, the coal busnes at least around here has always got slow around January or Febuary before the big election. Even when I worked underground. Most Saturdays we would work all day and some of the slopes I worked in we would go up on the mountain and pump the water for a few hours on sundays so it wouldn't take so long on Monday. Election years for about 9 or 10 months before the election it would slow down a bit and not work Saturday but go out Sunday and run the pump a few hours. Within 2 or 3 weeks after the election no matter which crooks got into office democrat republican or otherwise we would be back to work runnin wide open again

Re: I can get used to this
I'm not particularly familiar with coal. Are you guys doing hard, or soft, coal?
For the power industry, or the steel industry (if anybody still makes steel in this country)?
I just don't know squat about coal

This area has anthracite, which is hard coal, some grades of it are good for power plants, all of it is good for home heating and some grades are good for metallurgical coal.
I don't know how they grade it to honest. I know they do test burns and such, and weigh the ash and determine the sulfur that's in it. Somehow they can figure out the carbon content as well. They been makin diesel and gasoline from some of it that is bein mined out near Trevorton PA by the Shingara boys, those fellas are all underground miners there, and there is other stuff they use it for and make other stuff out of anthracite, and I would guess bituminous (soft coal) as well

I am grateful for what I have.

What do you owe him for? If you believe he's done something for you, that's between you and him.
From my view, nobody owes me and I owe nobody else.

Agreed, as long as we understand that faith is something we believe within ourselves, not for anyone else to follow.
Agree 100% on opinions, we all have one of them, just like we do our own for faith.

Re: I can get used to this
I can see where you coming from.
Back 1970's and 1980's self-employed. I would the 8 to 5 M-F. After the crew they left I would put in 2 to 4 hour and 10 hours on Saturday basically 60 to 80 week.
After that I had lots money nice big shop and said to myself why.
I could done like everyone else goof off and had fun.
In 2004 I sold my business lock stock and barrel.
I did machine work till 2010 (where I live it goes 114° F and most welding jobs are outside) after that paper pushing till retirement.
I quickly like 40 hour week vacation pay health insurance 😁😁😁.

I don't have a shop to work in unless the little ol chicken house counts, I dont do much in there anymore. I did when I had my first rig but evrytime I woud get started on somethin someone with nose problems would stop to see what I was doin and it would turn into a 1 hour bull**** session, so I avoid that and usually do what I do on the workbench on the back of my rig or go right to the job, and its just me the rig and the toys I got on it. So its all good and suits my style of work, I like bein outside and always did like workin on heavy equipment. Fabbin up little widgets isn't my thing, but what I have done a few times over the years as far as fabrication goes is building buckets from scratch, I would cut out the att achment points from the old bucket and build a brand new one out of plate...I built 3 skid loader buckets that way and and a big trakhoe bucket like that, those skid loader buckets I did out in the chickenhouse, the trakhoe bucket I did out in the backyard and they came with the trakhoe on a lowboy trailer and put it on right there and took it right out to the job.
I been truly blessed to have the work Ive got and thank God evry day for it, and the stuff that I have to do the work with. We always had food and clothes for the kids, and always got the bills paid.
