Oil testing for 7.3 powerstroke
Put 7k on this oil and going to have it tested and see if it still meets all the oil manufacturers specs. Under 25$ to test it. Can’t beat that lol

Re: Oil testing for 7.3 powerstroke
to get a true reading of what the engine is doing, you need to test the oil several times as you put on the miles to compare new and old samples to see if there is more metallic content in the oil or other impurities...

Re: Oil testing for 7.3 powerstroke
Get mine done by Toromont CAT, taxes in CAN$ 29.00....and they give you a container and mailing sample in is included :-).

Yup, mine was very high in metals but it's a new truck so it's to be expected. When they put on some training they mentioned it's not just the quantities of materials in the oil, it's the trend occuring..........Mike

I didn't think he mentioned tan or tbn

Re: Oil testing for 7.3 powerstroke
I believe you would need to know TBN to determine how much life is left in the oil. But I'm no expert.

Re: Oil testing for 7.3 powerstroke
If it meets the manufacturers requirements I’m guessing there’s still life in the oil.

Re: Oil testing for 7.3 powerstroke
I suppose you'd be alright if you just follow the change intervals recommended by the manufacturer.
I have some old engines in the Allis tractors that have so much blowby that the oil looks like molasses a few hours after an oil change. Never seems to make a difference. The Oliver was built in either 1964, or 1968, and it just started generating enough blowby to cloud the oil between oil changes. Prior to that, it was pretty clear between changes. I guess it all depends on the motor, and how it was taken care of.
The old Rotella seemed to handle soot better than the new formulation. The new stuff doesn't seem to suspend the soot as well. I'd rather have the soot in the oil, than sitting somewhere inside the motor. I switched to WalMart 15-40 on the Allis, and it comes out like sludge(I mean not like glue, but ya know) after a season I like to see black oil on an old engine.........means it's doing its job.
I think that you shouldn't push your motor oil in a diesel beyond change intervals. Excessive soot in the oil isn't all that great for the motor........remember that soot is carbon, which is very hard, and wears stuff. AND, it increases viscosity, which can make it hard to maintain proper oil pressure. Also makes for wear on cold starts, because it doesn't flow fast.

Re: Oil testing for 7.3 powerstroke
BTW................................What is the interval on that motor??

I got very little blow by. A ping pong ball moves around very little on the oil fill tube when running and my truck gets 22.5-28+ mpg when unloaded average miles, so not much going through the rings into the crank case
Thanks for the information sam

I use Rotella T5 15-40 every 5000 miles or a little less. Neither me or my dad have had an engine failure.

That’s right I do drive slow most times. You will be stopped at the light while I’m in 3-4th gear 25 yards behind you rolling right past you as your half way in the intersection after the light hits getting excellent mileage. Do it all the time rarely do I come to a complete stop. Have to do it that way anyway. It is what it is and works to my advantage. Lot of the time I’m in neutral and thow it in gear right before the intersection or under the light 3-4 gear, I count low as first. I actually wouldnt be in 4th 25 yards away while light is red. Too fast for this granny. I’d be gearing down in 3rd probably
4th is 35 mph minimum speed 1500 rpm and 3rd 25 mph minimum speed 1350rpm. I don’t cruise at that tho. Just pull it up. Cruise at 1500 minimum, 1st and 2nd can go much lower

Got one of my little Toyota pickups to get 100 miles more per tank. That truck got about 28 average I think. Started at like 19-20 before I started tinkering with it. 20r motor with Weber 32/36. Had good power too

I run in my bike, but certainly good enough for my little car..There is nothing like ester in high heat applications. Also floats carbon out like nobodies Business.. Hey Scott I think I'm pushing around 275K on the F-150. It's held together absolutely great on Castrol 10-30, but it's not a city driver. Nothing is close by here, and the motor gets hot enough to boil out the water, and crap, on every trip. It's gone a long way in keeping the old thing together. And, it's one of the old school proven motors that had decades of corrections to make it better. The new motors are not something I'd wanna own..........not enough time to get the bugs out.

Re: Oil testing for 7.3 powerstroke
Sammy,
189.000 on my f-150. It uses no oil between changes, and now pulls 19 mpg with downsizing the tires.. Same load rating though.. This is the very last year of the 351 Winsor Just got back from a 800 round trip to Seattle, and drives like new. (no Rattles)208,000 on the little car, and pulls 50 mpg going over the mountain some times. My Moto Guzzi gets the good stuff, and being a 2007 with 5400 miles it should last till the end. In fact al my rigs will make it longer then me.. First came out they spec.5-40 oil in that.. They figured out over time that 10-60 was the Ticket in them..Even a sticker under the seat with that info.. Wish it was 5-40, but 10-60 is it.. Had Motul in it, but this stuff has been proven to work great in my Ducati (air cooled) and my Aprilia V-twin Triple ester is the bomb .. https://maximausa.com/i-30497625-ext...n-10w-60.html#! I found deals on the stuff in 5 gals and less half price of the $50 normal price. You should see what the cams look like, and spotless the engine is inside..You are not going to spec out standard type oil in 10-60. Has to be syn. Ester is it.. (IMO)
By the Delo 400 is good oil for the 7.3. Cheap enough to just keep it clean.

Re: Oil testing for 7.3 powerstroke
I bought the motor craft filter this time. It was about half the price as wix and 4 gallons adds up. I went to ohrileys. They price matched Walmart if u show the ad. It was like 11 something a gallon. Baxter’s wants like 20$ a gallon for it. Instore at Walmart I think it’s about 12-13 something. He gave me the online deal since that’s what I showed him. 56 total and some change. No tax in Oregon
