I checked around and got the following prices from different places.

    14G sheet - $111 from place No2, $141 from place No3, and $150 from place No4
    1/4 round bar - $8.25 from place No2, $4.65 from place No3, and place No4 doesn't carry it.
Am in the final stages of my powder coat oven build and needed to buy some 26 ga. Sheet to build the hot air transfer duct. 4 x 10 sheet of 26ga galvanized was over $40. HVAC supply where I bought it said to expect major increases on equipment due to material increases. Everything I make is non-essential decorative-type stuff and many customers say I should be charging more....guess now I’ll find out if people will be willing to pay more.

I did just find a guy on Facebook marketplace selling 5x10 sheets of 14g for $100, 5x10 of 11g for $160, and 4x8 sheets of 3/16 for $160.
I will most likely stop by and see what I can get from him just to have more on hand

Raise your rates 10% and focus more on customer satisfaction. I was told once to offer 3 things to the customer. Quality, low price, rapic delivery, pick two out of 3. I constantly focus on quality and delivery, and when pushed on price I offer to push out lead times or have customer assume some outside processes.

It must be nice living in higher populated areas.

Facebook Marketplace pretty much never has stuff like that where I live. Just wheelchairs and "barely used" mattresses.

    Re: Steel Prices Increasing?

Was quoted this in mid Dec

    10" x 2.75" x 30' Cee Purlin $123.24
    4" X 1.5" X 20'' Cee Purlin $29.12
    3" x 1.5" x 20' Cee Purlin $24.70

    Was quoted this on Thursday

    10" x 2.75" x 30' Cee Purlin $143.37
    4" X 1.5" X 20'' Cee Purlin $37.53
    3" x 1.5" x 20' Cee Purlin $31.86

That's a pretty big spike. Have a 1/4 mind to wait on our project until later in spring when the economy has crashed more, prices should go down.

    Re: Steel Prices Increasing?

I have seen increases since early January and the supplier expects more to come.
no surprise when the price of everything else started going up since late october, early november in anticipation of the elections results I would guess. we are near 3 bucks a gallon for gas now and had gotten below 2 bucks for a short while in september, early october. my grocery bill has nearly doubled and I expect only worse to come, including rate increases for electricity. I know c-19 has had a impact but I think most of it is a result of folks with money to invest or commodities to sell reading the tea leaves in the bidden tea pot. I hope I am wrong but I doubt if the consumer is going to have anything to celebrate in the remainder of my life time if jobs keep getting deleted at the rate they have been for the last few weeks.

    Re: Steel Prices Increasing?

A few days ago a steel supplier stopped by my shop and we were discussing this very topic. He said one foundry had a fire or explosion or something so it was running at half capacity. then covid took a toll on others. He said something else which I cant remember now shut down another. So just a big ole basket of crap going around sounded like.

    Re: Steel Prices Increasing?

    I just got a quote on a piece of 18ga 3'x4' for $77.

I don't have many options for steel suppliers around here, but that was higher than I expected.

That works out to like 3$ lb. That's insane.

    Re: Steel Prices Increasing?

I’ll occasionally buy steel from tractor supply if I need a small piece, especially on a weekend when my metal supplier is closed. Now I’m well aware that TSC is high on their steel prices because that’s not their main gig. Last quote I got from metal supplier for certain types of HRC was barely cheaper than TSC, especially for smaller angle iron. Not sure if that’s necessarily new though since I got back into personal metal fab around May of last year.

Well... you can rest assured TSC will be upping their prices too... it's just a matter of time when their supplier catches up with the market
