    Mitten rack

Finally got this done, still 2-3 months of snow left:

I'm a complete beginner when it comes to welding. This was an interesting learning experience.

The rods are cut out of an old shelf, wire-wheeled, and bent in a vice.

The spheres I had to order from the US. Which really sucks because I paid 33$ for shipping on 14$ of product. And I live not far from Hamilton, which is supposed to be "steel city"

The plate was from home depot. That was probably a mistake. It just said soft steel on it, but it was clearly harder than the rods. I had to adjust my welding technique to try and get more heat into the plate than the rod. It's not pretty but it will hold.

To attach the balls I ground a flat spot on them, put the rod in a vice, and held the ball with a stick. It probably would have worked well if I were more efficient at starting a weld. Grinding that was a pain in the neck - trying to keep the sphere a sphere and the cyllinder a cyllinder.

    All done with E6011 AC.

Thanks to juicedz4 for the inspiration here and everyone who gave me advice here!

    Looks very useful

Did you clearcoat it or wax it? to keep the rust at bay....

It looks like paint to me.

Very nicely done. 6011 AC can produce rough welds but yours looks smooth. Also like the wood to steel relief

    Re: Mitten rack

    Thanks

I was going to paint it but given the complexity of the shape I didn't want to risk screwing up spraying it. And I thought brushing it may also look bad.

Then I realised the grey metal looks pretty good as it is. So I sprayed it with Permalac. I expect it will keep the surface rust-free. It's certainly going to be wet a lot

I do wish I could have polished it better, but I ran out of patience. It's just wire-wheeled.

Would wax have really been enough? That's an interesting thought.

That's true. It works for the kids' wet shoes and boots too.
