    60 INCH Mechanical Shear

Here’s something I just had to share. Due to nothing but sheer luck, this morning I was able to save this electric shear from the scrappers.

It hadn’t been used in years and a local marine fabrication shop needed the space, pushed it outside and scheduled the scrap truck to pick up the next day.

So ... $300 CA dollars later ($224.28 usd) and under an hour round trip, I had it home.

Nice overall shape for a 48 year old Made in China machine. Blade has no nicks but needs sharpening.

    60 inch width of cut.

    3/16” aluminum, 1/8” SS capacity

    5500 pounds 3 HP 3 phase

I like the "no cutting flat bar" sign... must be for that guy who uses wiss snips to cut wire.

    Congrats Terry.

Do the blades flip over? At least on my stomp shear, they flip over so it may be that yours can flip over and that side may be in good shape or better shape.

I haven’t had a chance to look yet Pat. I assume they do flip.

Or the retard that cuts rebar in an ironworker flat bar shear. That one was sprung so far out of alignment it was basically junk, they also had a 10' hydraulic 3/8" plate shear that had so many chunks out of the blades it couldn't cut an 8' sheet of 10 gauge. If I owned that equipment I would have shot the knuckle dragging, mouth breathing dips**ts that treated that stuff like that. Management just kept buying new stuff for the baboons... Pathetic.

Looks like your first project is making a belt guard. Do you know if there are any problems with it?

    Re: 60 INCH Mechanical Shear

The foreman said the shear was in working order but “in need of maintenance” and it sat unused because the owner was too cheap to address it.

I’m quite certain they had a bigger newer one in their shop.

It came with the belt guard. Doesn’t even require body work.

Heh heh. They loaded it for me too.

I didn’t even have to drop my forklift off the truck.

Thanks V. I’m kind of embarrassed though. I just had a thought and double checked. When I first unloaded it, I measured the bed width which is 60” but the width of cut is actually 52”.

Too traumatic. The poor shear was saved from the scrapper just last week.

I’m getting soft in my old age. It can stay....

In that case, I will give you $350 in Canadian for it since it didn't live up to its advertising. You make a quick profit of $50 and clear up space for a real 60" machine.

    Re: 60 INCH Mechanical Shear

I might not get around to setting up the shear until the winter but I thought I should take advantage of the good weather to degrease and wash the underside.

I scoured the surface rust off a spot on the blade and it is indeed flippable. There is at least one good edge available for sure so that is good news.

With a little bit of luck it will only require cleaning and set up.
