Re: Second 2" X 72" Belt Grinder Build

started powder coating the parts today, for some reason the 2 base parts images did not show up for posting. These are some of the optional parts, platen and its holder and the 8" contact wheel holder.
My DIY oven is Horizontal and I have a cart to hang the parts and then roll it into the oven.

    Nice job on the grinder.

Your horizontal powder coat oven is interesting. Do you have a build thread on it somewhere?

Not at this time, I build it many years ago, if you would like info on it I can upload it to the Google drive. You can send me your email address in a private message and I will send you the link to download from there. It is not a hard build parts can be had from eBay, my heating elements are from a stove top. Parts I powder coated were at 400 degrees. Inside cavity is 55 gal drums, I mounted small wheels for transport to storage.

Nice grinder build (x2), but that portable oven setup for powder coating is SLICK.

Very cool setup you got there.

Just for the record for anyone who wants to try powder coating, you can use anything from a toaster oven (eastwood sells one specifically for coating) for smaller parts to a domestic range (house stove/oven) to bake on the powder.

Re: Second 2" X 72" Belt Grinder Build

I had one 8" flat faced rubber wheel and bought a 8" serrated face rubber wheel. They are both about 4.5 pounds, the main difference is the serrated wheel has a larger bearing. This bearing is a 6206 and has a ID of 1.175", so I had to machine an adapter to press fit for the 1/2" axle bolt. The prices are very different the flat wheel was about $150 and the serrated wheel was about $50.

    Second 2" X 72" Belt Grinder Build

What’s the difference in use or performance between a flat vs. serrated wheel?

I was told the serrated wheel may act as a smoother grind, they seem to be the same density. The serrations make it so it is softer and allows the belt to give more. Some what like when removing the platen the belt will act softer or pliable.

I wonder if the belt would run cooler with the serrated wheel?

Re: Second 2" X 72" Belt Grinder Build

Since my shop is crowded I added wheels and casters to make the grinder mobile. The casters are added to the front and this makes the back wheel contact the floor, no casters the table sits on the 4 legs and will not move. The caster bracket is held on with one bolt each. The VFD has a remote pad so I hung it in a plastic tub up-side down under the middle shelf free from dust. I will put a rod behind the motor to mount the remote pad. Thanks for all the likes made me smile

For those that may be interested I have extra torsion springs, you can only buy the wire in packs of 4.

Great thread. Do you have a picture showing the full grinder cart? I am working on my own 2x72 grinder, and like you have limited space in my "shop" (garage!) and want to make mine mobile as well

Re: Second 2" X 72" Belt Grinder Build

images of grinder cart, if you put taller mounting legs on the grider you will not need the cutout in the rear. The height of the cart is convenient for my size something to consider when you build yours. When the grinder has the caster wheels removed the back wheels are not touching the ground. I use a small jack to install and remove the front caster wheels. I have a removable handle for moving, not need if you don't want one. If you want to build this grinder I can cut the custom shaped 3/8" parts on my CNC Plasma table for you.

Wow, thanks so much man for the additional pictures - gives me lots of great ideas for my own. I am working on a non-rotating grinder at this time, so thanks for the offer on the CNC cut parts.

Re: Second 2" X 72" Belt Grinder Build

Not to get pushy but if you look at entary #18 and the 45 degree angle I ground on the edge of the 3/8" was much easier than if I had a none rotating grinder. Look on YouTube there are many different designs for a rotating grinder, not saying build this one but think about having the ability to change the angle of the belt. Here is a video sowing the advantage of an angled grinder, I should of had a push stick for the moving the metal. But be advised do not ever do this with the wheel completely horizontal it will shoot the metal out like a bullet.

I briefly considered a tilt grinder, but those designs work best with a face-mounted motor. I already have a brand new Baldor 3HP, 3ph motor on hand, which uses a different mounting frame, like this one, so I am staying with the traditional/vertical grinder for now:
