    Yes, thanks much. My motor will be placed below the surface where the grinder mounted on, by using a pulley/shaft and pillow block bearings. Still waiting on parts to arrive, but I will post pictures of the project when I get started.

    yes that is what I am aiming at, these grinder produce a lot of metal dust and that's not good for electronics. Since my grinder is portable the VFD is attached to the cart.

    Quick question. I usually simply tack weld "standard" nuts to the steel, but here you appear to be welding a round & threaded cylinder?

    It is a 3/4" steel rod cut in short lengths drilled out to 5/16" then taped 3/8"X16 after welding. I found many time welding a nut on you still needed to run a tap through due to shrinkage. I also generally tap the metal I weld the rod to at the same time for a longer threaded hole.

    Nice - thank you. Yes, I get your point about shrinkage - out of the 5x I recently Tig'ed, 2 got "really" tight!

    I finished grinder number 3 (sold the other 2 to knife guys), finished this one with powder coating, shinny stuff.

    Beautiful (in function and looks)!

    Looks like you've got the design all worked out, love all the positioning.

    Have you ever given thought to making a small run to sell? It's likely out of my budget but people are still spending money like crazy, you might have a VERY merry christmas .

    I have sold 2 but I have to many other projects to do more, having a Plasma CNC helps to cut the custom shapes parts. Still working on finishing Plasma CNC table number 10

    As a side note I needed a way to remove the larger parts from my power coating oven (its horizontal and 400 degrees) This what I came up with to attach to a floor jack.

    I think your belt grinder is deluxe!

    One comment, instead of messing about with a jack and small casters, make two handles so you can “clip” them on, tilt back the machine on its large castors like a wheel barrow to move it then remove the handles?

    Hi, couple remedial questions if I may:

    Do you use course or fine threaded bolts for the idler and guide/tension wheels?

    Do you weld the platen to the carrier or? Just wondering how they are attached.

    If I'm doing some knife grinding and edge smoothing (not hogging out a bunch of material) - are those glass/ceramic platen covers good, bad, or eh?

    Fine or coarse shouldn't matter unless it's thinner material then I would use fine thread . I can't tell you about knife making but I used some AR 400 for my platen, just a few small welds hold it on. I've gone thru 20-30 belts and haven't noticed any wear. On Ellis belt grinders they use carbon plate for the platen.

    Here is an image of the platen attachment I used and I use a steel platen. There are many belt grits to choose from and even some that look like scotch bright.

    I used coarse threads on the bolts, but a locking nut also to insure no movement of the bolts holding the wheels. I tap the base and add the locking nuts.

    You can weld anything................if you're willing to accept the possible distortion that goes with it. Always look at the area where you're gonna weld, and try to figure out how it might pull with the heat, then make your decision. Use minimal size welds............less heat, less distortion most of the time. Preheat the area if need be. This reduces distortion because the surrounding metal expands, and doesn't provide as much restraint for the highly heated weld area.

    Clamping a workpiece is highly overrated. You'll simply find that the workpiece springs when you remove the clamps. I'm not saying that it absolutely doesn't work...........it just doesn't give you the results you'd expect.
