I think my 5 footer has 1-1/4 on each blade..... I run an old english 20hp diesel for doing up to 5-6 inch trees/roots/saplings it's a mite underpowered and I do NOT have a slip clutch on it... so when it gets overloaded or bound it just kills the motor

My Bush Hog 105 is very old. It is considered a medium duty hog. I believe the blade bolts are a very high strength 1-1/4 the blades pivot on. I'd guess each 18" long blade is 10 LBS. Manual specs 450 Foot pounds of torque on them & something like 1000 for the main nut holds the stump jumper to the shaft. I've never lost a nut, but the main shaft broke a few times.

The tractor I powered it with for 33 years is rated at 39 HP at PTO. I did twist the internal (inside the transmission) shaft. Had to replace.

These blades come in at 12" and 6 lbs. If I need to add a torque tamer in the drive that wont be a problem. The shaft will be tied to the sprocket with a power lock hub.

With the size you want to shred it would be much quicker and safer to rent a mini hoe and dig them out, pile them up and burn baby burn.

You do have to be a bit careful with those newer small engines as they shrunk the shaft a bit so it's really easy to shear them off have lost more than one myself just by regular brush/rock mowing

I like the idea. It would make a devastating brush cutter if you would do that to a gravely walk behind with a saw blade on a 30" mower.

Gravely had a saw blade option, limited guarding, it was rated to cut something like 8" trees.

I have an old Jari Monarch sickle bar mower. When it is tuned up it will out mow any rotary mower out there. 8' weeds? No problem. 1 1/2" trees & shrubs? No problem, it will mow them as fast as you can walk.

Sickle bar mowers are not being sold anymore in US as far as I know, but if you can design one with combine parts, you will be a mowing dude!

Those JARI's where made in Little Falls MN 50 years ago. I got to know the plant manager and got leftovers from the production run.

I have a small collection of Gravely sickles to go with my power unit. Those Gravelys are getting old, but they are tough!

I have a Solo Combi sickle bar mower that the engine can be used on other attachments. It uses a clutch that doesn't engage until you throttle it up. The 2 cycle engine twists on and off in about 15 seconds. Sadly I don't have the engine anymore so need to adapt something else. Rented a Jari once and the Solo was much better. The biggest problem with the Jari was that it was way too fast to walk behind, especially on uneven or unknown ground. If the ground was soft the narrow wheels would sink in. The Solo had small pneumatic lug type tractor tires and a more controllable walking speed. The video above confirms the Jari is too fast. What if the operator stepped in a hole or something?

They are still sold, but not made in USA. I bought a BCS 2 wheel tractor and there are sickle mower options for it :

Those BCS sickles have been around for a long time. Even though they're made in Italy and not N.A. they've proven to be decent units.

I see 5-6 of em' a year on CL when I'm looking for other things tractorwise... so there's probably a few more that I don't see cause it's not like I'm on the computer everyday looking

I have a lot of attachment for my bradley but not the sickle mower. Maybe I can find one of those to rebuild too.

Hard to find the sickle blades that fit. Standard hole spacing on ag blades is 2" or 2 1/4". The Jari blades are 1 3/4" IIRC. I wish I could find replacements that fit - my bar needs to be rebuilt.

Check with a Gravely/Ariens dealer, preferably one that's been around a while. As I recall the Gravely bars were also a closer hole pattern/spacing than conventional ag.
