Nope, no big Detroit in there, just a little 6.5 turbo "powerless" chevy diesel. It's not fast, but it's been reliable for 270,000 miles. (touch wood).

I knew there wasn't a big Detroit in it. Doesn't that use a roosamaster pump? Have you had to replace the pump yet, that's usually a weak point, that & cracked heads, but not harmful cracks.

Stanadyne electronic pump and it was replaced at 145,000 miles. I have replaced 2 of the PMD boxes (pump mounted driver) that amplify the computer signal to the pump, even mounting them off the engine on a heat sink wont keep them from failing occasionally. Mine has never had a head problem... Yet. In '97 GM did revise the cooling system with a higher flow pump and the dual thermostat housing and that did away with a lot of the cracked head issue. Most all that truck is still original equipment except for a few steering linkage joints and rear U-joints. Considering it's hard life over the years, I'm pretty happy with it.

That's cool, I didn't follow that motor too much, I knew a farm boy that went through numerous heads trying to find a pair that weren't cracke, it was an earlier 6.5.

It's kind of funny, my oldest daughter bought a 85 Chevy 3/4 ton with a 6.2 in 2003 when she turned 16, really nice loaded Silverado edition. Four months later it was blowing coolant out of the radiator overflow, so I dumped a full bottle of "Bars leak" into it and amazingly that ended the problem for over two years until she traded it in for a Dodge Cummins.

Four months later it was blowing coolant out of the radiator overflow, so I dumped a full bottle of "Bars leak" into it and amazingly that ended the problem for over two years until she traded it in for a Dodge Cummins.

A mechanic once told me to use chop (hog feed) instead of Bars Leak. He said either way it's going to blow up eventually and the chop will be easier to clean out.

MacGyver cracked a couple eggs to seal the rad on the Jeep. He also took the tires off so it would run on the railroad tracks. Have also heard pepper can seal a small rad leak.

Hat is off to you mobile guys. I don't want to leave my shop. Welding something just outside of the doors that doesn't fit inside is about it and I don't like doing that. I'm old, a little crabby but I earned the right.

Im just the opposite, I dont wanna work at home. I get too many folks comin around with nose problems and offerin suggestions when they got no idea what they talkin about. It usually turns into a big bull**** session and I get nothin done, so if I have to I take the project with me and stay and do it on the job after Im done with what Im goin to do there. Most of the stuff these guys bring to the house for me to do I turn down anyway because I know it wont work and I dont want the hassle of it

I nearly bought a new Chevy Blazer with the 6.2, that was about the time that the copper industry started getting shaky, I backed out & after the problems with the 6.2 I'm glad I didn't buy it.

Here's an idea of what welding rigs are like in Alberta. Usually cabinets up front and work area at the back with a thick plate and a vice.
