I am assuming you are referring to my lack of machining skills when it comes to cutting keyways?

Here is a comparison of a Wilton 1765 which is a 6-1/2" vise next to my Yost 5 inch.

I have not figured out yet where I am going to put the Wilton so it sits in storage. I couldnt pass it up due to its price.

I've had a number of those...without the wheel of course. That's a pretty cool idea. I've got a small pile of old spindles and might try making something like that so I could swap a handle for a wheel...can see that being handy.

The Tradesman line is sort of Wiltons response to all the other companies putting really wide jaws on smaller body vises...purely a marketing thing. I wrote an article about jaw size to body size because it no longer really means anything. Back in the day a quality 5" jaw vise was roughly the same size from every company...give or take. Now you've got 5" jaw vises that weigh 40lbs and others that are 100lbs. That just confuses people and makes it hard to compare...I go off weight primarily.

Wilton's 1780 is their largest Tradesman with 8" wide jaws, but it weighs the same and opens an inch less than the 500S Machinist vise

Nice info. I use the heck out of my Yost because it is so beefy and a good quality.
I have an older Rock Island in the other shed but it is bolted down.

That is nice but I’m too cheap to pay that much (almost $400 Cdn )

That's one of the (few) benefits of living in an area with a history of manufacturing...no shortage of tools, although the supply has really dried up in the last year or so. The coachmaker's pattern probably wasn't made in huge numbers and I've seen a lot of them that have been ruined by people trying to use them like a normal machinist vise, so that really limits how many still left around.

For that sort of work I'd be tempted to buy a modern vise made out of steel, machine a set of jaws in the desired profile and then weld them in place. That would be a fun project!

I've got a 4.5" Craftsman made by Rock Island on one of my tables....made January 1940 and it's still as tight as a new vise. It's one of only a handful I have no plans to sell. I've only had a couple of RI vises, but really like them. RI was one of the few that stamped their vises with dates....Wilton and Reed are the only other two I'm aware of that did this.

I have one like this on my rig, my wife found it at a yard sale a long time ago, it was on my first rig, I never found a brand name of any kind on it, it most likely made in china but it works fine for what I do. I take it apart once in a while and oil up the screw inside it so it works smooth

Yeah, I'm guessing china too... when I get a chance I'll hit it with a wirewheel and see if anything pops out... probably rip it apart and paint too... just because I find things always work better when they gots fresh paint on them not even sure where it came from but it's in one of the piles I unloaded after a demo job

I'm betting it's got a thick coat of bondo under that paint. Had a couple of them just 'cause they're cheap and handy, when the guys started burnin' on them we found all the stuff the Chinese were hiding. Huge voids in the castings come to mind.
If you get a good one, they are ok. If you get a bad one, you know right away. HF is very accommodating.

I know you're right about the bondo When I first saw the thick paint coming off it I just assumed a lot of paint.... but later that night I remembered some of the counterweights I have stripped for forklifts.... they all have had 'filler/smoother' on them that looked the same...
