CAT D5 6 way blade repair

I just started a new job, and the first task is a kinda interesting one, a 6 way blade off of a D5 dozer that has been beat to **** and needs some love.

I didn't get any pics of the start of the job, but a heap of crack repairs, and the primary spherical bearing boss had been completely *ahem* "removed" somehow.

So crack repairs and a new bearing boss.

The overview, had a heap of crack repairs to do around the mounts for the blade angle lugs, the doubler skin and the stick rake attachment lugs on the bottom.

The stick rake attachments were an in the field modification, and whoever welded them on didnt like overhead so they only did one tiny (like 1/8th) fillet weld on all the overheads, so of course they all cracked, with all of the dirt, paint, rust and crud built up MIG wasnt going to be an option, I ground a groove and run a small hot root pass with a 1/8 6010 to try and burn out as much of the crap, then a 3 run fillet with 7016 over the 6010 on the gusset plates.

And some overhead, not as neat, but its been 6 months since I've run stick, and 12 since I've run 7016.

and some vertical up as well, same deal 6010 root, 7016 over the top.

The factory weld's on this doubler plate has some nasty undercut on the top toe of the weld which caused it to crack, I oxy/LPG gouged that out and re welded it with the MIG, no idea what settings as it's a 30 year old WIA machine with no read outs, but felt like around 35 volts and 650 IPM of wire.

Same thing here, undercut on the weld toe leading to cracking but the repair is welded vertical up with the MIG this time.

These weld's failed for a different reason, massive porosity, like full on aero bar bubbly **** when I gouged it out.

And the reason the blade came in at all, somehow they managed to rip out the 2 inch thick main bearing boss, so machined with the line boring bar ready to have a new boss welded in.

Yeah, maybe its not the same aero bars as in other countries, but they're still pretty popular here.

Threads like this are great - they remind me why I like to weld
