Changing thread display options

I have been trying to change my thread display options, but no joy. There doesn't seem to be a way to save whatever changes I have made. Every time I leave a forum and then come back, the options are as they were before the change. I kind of feel like an idiot, since I have changed these things in the past but seem to have forgotten how I did it.
