Fly Wheel repair

The grounds keeper where my shop is busted the flywheel in his Honda mower. He immediately went out and bought another Honda mower, but brought the busted flywheel to me for an opinion on repair so he can have a backup mower.
It's cast iron, the shaft is tapered, and unfortunately it split through the keyway. So even though I can weld it up, I'm thinking the machining cost afterwards might be more than just buying another flywheel. Also there is balancing to consider as well.
What do you recon?

Re: Fly Wheel repair
You also have that bonded on magnet to deal with. Shouldn't be too hard to find another flywheel. I wouldn't waste my time on it, myself.

Re: Fly Wheel repair
I would weld it, and machine it, but I would do that at work. Beefier machines, and they have a keyway broach set to use that I don't have to buy. But check out a machinist forum that is local. A hobbyist or retired machinist may be able to make it right for a case of beer.

Re: Fly Wheel repair
I googled "honda mower flywheel" - there was one that looks just like your photo on first screen for $125 or so. Not sure if it's same one, but pretty cheap insurance vs welding and machining if it is.

Let me guess. He broke it trying to remove it.

He tells me it broke at full revs. He suspects the the retaining screw was done up so hard on the taper, the force caused or contributed to the break.

Re: Fly Wheel repair
Thanks for the advice and help guys. I checked out ebay and they can be had from local supply for $65 ozzy kopeks delivered. It's a no brainer so I handed it back to the mower man and passed on the details. He's happy with that and so am I.

You were wise enough to shop for the replacement and recognize it for the bargain that it is. He was smart enough to recognize your wisdom. A truly rare convergence!

It's a shame it didn't shear the key, that's what happens on a lot of "small" engines.
