Need advice on what welding hood to purchase
I have spent so much money on hoods. my favorite is optrel but only like to use it for tig welding bc stick really takes its toll on it. I have so far purchased a hood from outlaw leather. regular flip up. So far has pretty much been useless for me. doesnt fit right i have made every adjustment and when the hood is on your head the correct way you can only see out half the lens. works if your just standing up regular and welding flat but trying to weld bottom of pipe its garbage. Just bought wendy hood. put it on and tried sanding it. another piece of garbage. so ive wasted over $300 on these. are there any good helmets like a sugar scoop that i can put my own lens in and be able to get under pipe and tilt my head and still have the helmet stay on good but without using one that is a complete helmet style.

Re: Need advice on what welding hood to purchase
If I can’t use my Optrel Crystal 2.0, my alternate choice is a Lincoln Viking 3350. It’s very clear.
Miller Trailblazer Pro 350D
Miller Suitcase MIG
Miller Spectrum 2050
Miller Syncrowave 250DX
Lincoln 210MP

Re: Need advice on what welding hood to purchase
Yea, I gotta say, looking through Optrel really is a noticeable difference.
I think you want the best helmet you can afford, not a place to cheap-out especially for Tig and other fine work. But, why not just keep using it on everything and replace the, yea I know expensive, outer lens when "dirtier" forms of welding takes its toll on it?

Re: Need advice on what welding hood to purchase
Fiber Metal's pipe liner or any Pancake, prolly best helmets out there!
We've done so much, for so long, with so little. Were now qualified to do anything with nothing !

Re: Need advice on what welding hood to purchase
I do not think I have seen it mentioned,, but, no matter which helmet you select,,,
the helmet would not be used by me until I added a leather apron to the bottom of the helmet,,
I never have to button the top button of my shirt to protect my neck,, the leather apron is there to protect that area.
I was really showing the bag my wife made me for a new helmet I purchased.
I had a Miller helmet that came in a bag,, I have been addicted to having a clean helmet ever since.
The helmet bag even has a pocket for my "sleeves" and my welding glasses.
I weld using old glasses, so that I do not have melted metal balls on the lens of my newer glasses,,

Re: Need advice on what welding hood to purchase
I bought the fibre pipe scoop helmet. Same issue as all outlaw leather flip, they use that cheap head gear and it doesn’t fit my head right bc I don’t have a huge dome piece.... lol even with a hap my line of site is at the top of the lens or window. And then it I move my head to the side to word bottom I’m really all screwed up. The Wendy pancake good fits perfect over head I just sanded too much bc I have a weird shaped head I guess and ruined it. Do they make a pancake that you don’t have to sand? So far I’ve spent around $1000 on helmets only one that fits great is optrel but hate using it for stick and wanted a flatter shield in the front so I can get close and not keep hitting on things

If you find a source, maybe you could buy your test coupons from them too -- you know, since they weld stuff and all... ;-)

Re: Need advice on what welding hood to purchase
I just fitted a jackson 370 headgear onto my old arse jackson sugar scoop or "Bender". It is just like a fibre metal but with a flip up lens. I love it now. I can weld while doing the proverbial handstand now. I had been using my old Speedglas 9002v for all the rough work and tight areas. The lens covers are expensive to replace when you destroy them constantly. I use a Miller Infinity in the shop. So I get your reasoning.
