Actual Hobart Champion 16 no spark

This is the pre-miller Hobart Champion 16 welder. Ran great day before. Shut it off for the night. Moved it. Tried starting it the next morning, no spark. No juice going to plugs. Plugs appear fine. Ordered a coil. Anything else to check maybe? Thanks

Engines of that era had three different types ignition,, and each type has its own quirks,,

As an example Kohler built a "K" engine and a Magnum,,
from 10 feet away, the engines look identical,, but the "K" engine had points, the other engine did not.
The K engine would have the points fail often,, the Magnum often had the coil fail.

So,, specifically, what engine do you have?

    Onan ? Things to check

    Manual first,

    Fuses,

Check voltage at battery to switch ,switch to coil .

Check Ohms 12v side of coil.

    Check points to ground.

    Flywheel key

    Magnet in flywheel

I have older Onan's some of this may not apply, always refer to service manual.

    good luck

    Oh, yes, onan
    Did manual
    Checked fuse
    Checked 12v to coil
    Haven't done ohms yet
    No points
If coil isn't issue, will check those next

I know (at least I think,,, ) that the machine does not have a seat,,
but, is their any other safety switches?

My Honda powered pressure washer will shut off periodically due to the "low oil" switch,,
even when the oil is full.

My Onan powered machine (24HP, P224) has several safety switches,, including a neutral switch on a foot control,,
and it has one on the PTO engage lever,,

The machine will not start if the engine cover is up like this pic,,

Could be the electronic ignition module located behind the flywheel or a defective oil pressure switch.

Here's a .txt file of the ignition module test. The .pdf version file with illustrations is too large to upload to the forum. If you need the P216 service manual just PM me an email address.

The factory style coil is no longer. It had the mounting holes through the coil. What we had to do was clip off the short mounting leg (there are 2 short ones) seen in the picture for it to mount. Onan parts wanted $85 for the same coil/kit.

So , it was the ignition coil, not the pickup coil.

Do you have points, or an electronic module ? The coil says for "Ignition Coil for Onan Points Model BF B43 B48 NHC CCK " not sure how much of a difference it makes.

Is it running good again ? I have been having trouble finding a fuel pump for my tractor with an Onan motor, everybody says "national back order "

    best of luck

$15 for the fuel pump,, and it appears ready to ship,,

The Amazon pump appears to be identical to the one on the Gravely in the picture above,,

Re: Actual Hobart Champion 16 no spark

My Pump is the #149-2501 which is mounted to the carburetor, not the flywheel shroud. I could probably rig something , but I hate to do things like that on fuel system components. They don't seem to have rebuild kits for the Onan fuel pumps like they do for Kohlers. I imagine they'll be available in a month or two, but the real culprit on the Case/Ingersoll was the points. I have about 300 hours on this set of points, ordered new from OnanParts and got some plugs for it too(B43M short reach). The price for my coil at Onanparts is $106 for the Onan made in Japan coil. I try not to go too cheap when I buy parts for my Onan motors on my tractor ,and on my Miller welder.

I think your pump, and my shroud mounted pump are identical, just mounted in different locations,,

Maybe that is why everyone else shows "out of stock",, possibly out of stock forever. ??

Re: Actual Hobart Champion 16 no spark

They were available about 2 months ago, not as common as the other style. No room to mount on shroud on my tractor. Electric pump is also a possibility, but can be a problem if it has too much pressure. I'm still able to find parts for older tecumseh, and briggs motors. Maybe the pump I need is stuck on a container somewhere out in the ocean. Who knows ???

Thank you for the information this will save some time if on is ever needed.

My champion 16 had a 3 terminal rectifier break and the part is no longer available from Miller. It's the 3 terminal rectifier coming from the brushes. Wound up using a 10a 600v bridge rectifier, the ground terminal is not used.
