ESAB Rogue 180i

I am looking at the Rogue 180i (or similar from Miller and others). I notice that Miller and ESAB both say " 6010 not recommended for open root welding". What's this about?

I have a Bobcat 225 that I have used for my stick welding on the farm but have retired and am selling it. I want a stick machine for the few mobile jobs that I might have (fence repair, etc). The gas keeps ruining the carb on the Bobcat. I either have to rebuild it or replace it nearly every year. I have a Honda EU7000is generator which is fuel injected and has never give me trouble even with 3 year old gas in it. Plan is to run the stick machine off of it.

The Honda is 5500W continous/7000W surge.

Any comments?

I've used the ESAB 161 with 6010. It ran it fine, but the arc would shut off really often when trying open root with it.

Maybe the 180 performs similarly.

My Bobcat 225nt works well, without carb issues, but only because I use the non-oxygenated 91 octane gas in it.
If you use that stuff, your carb will be happier

Yeah both the 161 and 180 probably lack the voltage for open root. Just use 6011 instead. If it's code you probably wouldn't use either machine anyway.

No code stuff here on the farm. I have plenty of 6011

From the manual :

"Supply from power generators - The power source can be supplied from different types of generators. However, some generators may not provide sufficient power for the welding power source to operate correctly. Generators with Automatic Voltage Regulation (AVR) or with equivalent or better type of regulation, with rated power 8 kW, are recommended"

If you run off the 240v plug in the generator you should be able to use the welder with 1/8" electrodes. I also have a Honda eu6500 generator, and have run my 200 amp lincoln in MIG and stick with it, and its rated a little less wattage than yours.

I fill your pain on carb rebuild on my lawn tractor with an old kohler command. Yet, my honda engines sit for months and uneffected. Just started my push mower yesterday for the first time this season.... Second pull it started and ran fine.

I have considered the 180i only because it looks cool. My 161 does all i need off my 5k watt genny at 240v. Runs fine fillet using 6010 rods on household 240. Cannot recall paying attention to it on genny.
