ESAB Rogue 180i

I am looking at the Rogue 180i (or similar from Miller and others). I notice that Miller and ESAB both say " 6010 not recommended for open root welding". What's this about?

I have a Bobcat 225 that I have used for my stick welding on the farm but have retired and am selling it. I want a stick machine for the few mobile jobs that I might have (fence repair, etc). The gas keeps ruining the carb on the Bobcat. I either have to rebuild it or replace it nearly every year. I have a Honda EU7000is generator which is fuel injected and has never give me trouble even with 3 year old gas in it. Plan is to run the stick machine off of it.

The Honda is 5500W continous/7000W surge.

Any comments?

I've used the ESAB 161 with 6010. It ran it fine, but the arc would shut off really often when trying open root with it.

Maybe the 180 performs similarly.

My Bobcat 225nt works well, without carb issues, but only because I use the non-oxygenated 91 octane gas in it.
If you use that stuff, your carb will be happier

Yeah both the 161 and 180 probably lack the voltage for open root. Just use 6011 instead. If it's code you probably wouldn't use either machine anyway.

From the manual :

"Supply from power generators - The power source can be supplied from different types of generators. However, some generators may not provide sufficient power for the welding power source to operate correctly. Generators with Automatic Voltage Regulation (AVR) or with equivalent or better type of regulation, with rated power 8 kW, are recommended"

If you run off the 240v plug in the generator you should be able to use the welder with 1/8" electrodes. I also have a Honda eu6500 generator, and have run my 200 amp lincoln in MIG and stick with it, and its rated a little less wattage than yours.

I fill your pain on carb rebuild on my lawn tractor with an old kohler command. Yet, my honda engines sit for months and uneffected. Just started my push mower yesterday for the first time this season.... Second pull it started and ran fine.

I have considered the 180i only because it looks cool. My 161 does all i need off my 5k watt genny at 240v. Runs fine fillet using 6010 rods on household 240. Cannot recall paying attention to it on genny.

I got the new Rogue. Did some welding on an old log splitter my dad and I built back in the 80's. I haven't tried adjusting the Hot start option but it starts an arc well- not a lot of sticking like my old Thunderbolt and my Bobcat do.

I welded at 140A with 7018 and about 100A with 6010 and the welder never got hot and shut off.

My only complaint is the 10' stinger lead needs to be 20'.

I do have one question if anyone knows. When you select 6010 instead of "all other rods" what does that do? I accidentally left it on 6010 and welded with 7018.

After I hook it up to my Honda EU7000is I will report back how that works..

That setting typically provides more voltage at a given amperage. It would most likely produce more spatter when using 7018. I had the same short cable issue with my 161. I changed out my stinger and welding ground leads as well as changed out the power cord to a more flexible 30' cord.

Added a strap to my 161, carry it over my shoulder. Hang it when on a ladder. Don't think I would like longer cables. It fits nicely in my Rigid rolling tote with cables, rods, and adapters..

Mine just sets on a cart most of the time so the 10' cables are way to short. Should be 15' minimum but 20' would be better to reach equipment I am welding on

Go straight to 50 ft. Even better.

If you go to 50' leads, make sure to size them for the amperage you'll be using.

Go too long and the cable might tip the cart or allow for unnoticeable dragging of the little box.

20' is plenty long to reach whatever I am welding on. I can always roll the cart out if I have too. (I have a 20' heavy duty 240V extension cord made for those times.)


Last question. Do I use the 6010 setting for a 6011?

I would use that setting. Yeah those 50' leads are pointless on a welder like that. I have about 20-25 feet on the stinger and about 15 feet on the ground lead. I did upgrade my ground clamp and stinger as well as put a 30' cord on my esab 161.

I just picked up a Rogue 180i. Before this I've been using a Multimatic 200 for light portable stick work (minus the wire spool and MIG gun) and while it'll run 6010, you have to pay attention to arc length and run it a certain way. It'll run 1/8 7018 no problem, but rods sticking is a thing sometimes.

I plugged the 180 in here at the shop and gave it a quick test run...wow, starting and running 6010 is just as easy as on my TB. And 7018 seems to strike better than the MM200 as well. I can see that this machine and I will be doing a lot of work together in the future.

The only thing I wish it had was Tweco receptacles instead of Dinse, but I've got the adapters if needed -- everything else I own except the MM uses the large Tweco. I'd rather roll up one long 220V extension cord than 2 long leads, so I'll use the shorties as much as I can.

I built a short extension cord to connect the Rogue to my 180i. I first tried 6010 at 100A and 120A. Works great. Then got out a 7018 and cranked the amps up. Ran great at 140A and 150A. At 180A the generator overload light came on. Tried it at 170A it ran but sounded overloaded. I think that about 160A is the max you can do when using the Honda EU7000ise (5500W continuous, 7000W peak) which is plenty for me
