log splitter push plates or blade side to side play on I beam

On a home built log splitter what type of tolerance should a person have on the push plates or blade with the side to side and up and down play on I beam which is 8 inch wide by .5 thick.? I would think if its to tight it would start shaving metal on I beam or push plate/blade

iI would think that you would want the plate to move freely without binding with minimal clearance, if I was building it I think I would build the guide plates so they can be shimed and or moved to provide minimal clearance without binding.

I think I used 3/4" wide banding as spacer shims for the slide,, and started welding,,
in other words I did not overthink it,,

My biggest concern was to make my splitter narrow, so that it did not take up much shop space,,

It worked!! I probably use it more as a press, than a wood splitter,
    notice the interchangeable wedge,,

I usually go with between 1/16" -1/8" depending on how bent or worn the beam/guide is. It just has to move freely. Even with clearance and lubrication, you may still get some scraping/galling when spitting some big knotty pieces. Not sure which design you went with, post up some pic's, that would help in giving you better answers.
