Will a respirator fit under a pipeliner helmet?

Sometimes I wear a respirator when I'm welding, depending on the filler and/or materials. Lately I've been contemplating getting a pipeliner type helmet (let's not get into the whys). Will a respirator fit under a pipeliner? It BARELY fits under my Miller Digital Advantage, which is quite roomy, and it looks like a pipeliner fits much more snugly. I don't want to get one if I can't wear a respirator under it.

I use miller p101(I think) under my hoods. Works good and the for is nice. It does touch the led display of my digital infinity but it's ok.

As long as the headgear is adjustable so you can vary the front-to-back distance from the front of the hood to your face, then yes you can make it work. I have a cheapie plastic hobart one I use for oxy-acet and my 3M respirator 6503QL fits just fine with the proper headgear adjustment.

I agree, I think the key role played by the possibility or inability to adjust the helmet!

Cool Re: Will a respirator fit under a pipeliner helmet?

I think its the next series up maybe the 7500 3M takes the same filters but the exhaust valve is ported down. Makes for less fogging. I think it fits the same under the hood clearance wise. I should check next time I'm in the shop. I also use a disposable 3M welding
respirator when I'm not in the shop. It has a valve on the front. 3M 8212/8214 perhaps ?

P100 is a better filter than an N95.

Re: Will a respirator fit under a pipeliner helmet?

Generally...what is more important than the filter efficiency (N95 vs P100) is how much you wear it. If you skip wearing it for "quick jobs" or immediately take it off after you are done grinding but still standing in the same spot when you were grinding, then you are exposing yourself 100% for that time. If you wear it religiously, then it might help you a little to use a higher efficiency respirator filter, but few people are that meticulous. It is more important that you WEAR IT and don't take it off than it is exactly what the efficiency is. Of course if you are operating under OSHA or some other regulation that requires P100 or something, you need to meet that no matter what, but this is a point to try and explain what is most important in reality.

Most welding respirators are P100. Proper fit is the most important. Some places don't allow any facial hair but that's usually for full face respirators.

The P100 filters 99.9% of airborne particles, including oil-based particles.

    99.97% actually, but who's counting?
