Gloves for 30-50A TIG, fine detail work

    Hi,
My welding gloves are thick, it's hard to manipulate the torch/rod. What are the implications of using for example Mechanix type gloves that are commonly sold in stores, that have some thickness, but probably cannot stop a metal drippage directly onto them? This is a welding job of 0.028-0.05" thick 4130, so it has less energy than many jobs.

I like the goatskin gloves from Tillman. Great dexterity. https://www.amazon.com/Tillman-Goats.../dp/B0074PYVJA

I think the deerskin ones are even more supple than the goatskin.

I use these kind of gloves for tig work all the time. The gloves only cost a couple of dollars. They give me the texture and dexterity I need. You can find them in the garden section of a hardware store or even cheaper at an Asian market.

At low amp work like you mentioned, they would work fine and are inexpensive. I buy 20 to 30 pairs at a time and wear those same gloves for grinding or moving metal.

Correct. Most of those kinds of gloves are made of a nylon or polyester material, which will melt right through to your skin if metal or slag drips on them.

If you are TIG welding and have metal dripping on your hand, you are doing something seriously wrong.

These are my everyday shop gloves. They’re great. Also use them for TIG up to about 100amps/short runs. $15 for a dozen at Amazon

I got the goatskin ones from Amazon, they were available, come in today. I appreciate the advice; it seemed the super thick ones were holding me back for this.

You've been wearing the big thick gloves, so just make sure you don't forget you have your new gloves on and try to move something that's very hot.

See lots of weldors wear no gloves at all but that's not good. Maybe none for the filler rod but still have the IR and UF light from the arc that is harmful to your skin.

If you don't mind spending a bit more for a better quality glove that will last longer, not burn with sparks and protect you from cuts much better... you can try the cut resistant work gloves. They are made from dyneema or equivalent fiber and last a lot longer. Might be a tad thicker though.

I have used Tillmans, Blue Deamon (every kind), Justin Voss Sponsored wiz bang gloves, Jody's gloves he pushed. To me they are all junk for the money. Every one of them splits at the seams. The Justin Voss ones you can't even feed properly as the rod just sticks. Ok here we go flame away. For the money go and get the Vulcan tig gloves at HF. I have done tests and they outlast all of the above. They are more than half the price of the above listed. It is hard finding the size sometimes though. JohnT aint gonna find his size, LOL.

No flaming from me. Daughter and I use them. Would be sticking with Tillmans if HF had not sent us a case of them asking us to demo. We were shocked.

    Funny you mention that

I was just going to say that I really like the gloves that Louie posted

But I can never find them in a 2 XL

Actually some of these gloves I could probably use a 3XL
