Bought a flux core welder at Canadian Tire on sale two weeks ago. It's still in the box. Never welded in my life.

I design breweries and have always wanted to know how to weld. Some odd projects around the house, etc, I'd like to accomplish. Not sure where this is going, so I'm starting to learn.

Zoo? It's the jungle baby! (Guns & Roses) Welcome to the forum Rich. Your flux-core machine will be good for small projects like shelves, flower pot holders, work table or ornamental iron work type jobs. If you have questions just ask away. Mostly you'll get good answers to your questions.

Cheers, guys. I don't even know what to ask. I don't even know where to source scrap metal to play around. I don't have a mask yet, nor a jacket. What do you recommend using instead of running out and spending $100 on a jacket? I have gloves and some goggles. Not the best I suppose.

Always wear gloves and long sleeves when welding. You don't need a fancy leather jacket for a small machine like yours. A welders beanie is good to wear on your head. ONE thing to never wear is anything vinyl. It will melt and stick to your skin. Ball caps are not for welding. Also don't wear a jacket with a zipper. 1 errant spark and the zipper is ruined. Unfortunately most coveralls you find for sale have zippers. The type rental companies use have a hook and loop like on your jeans. They are also heavier cotton. Rental companies here will sell used coveralls.

Cotton clothes, Jeans, long sleeve cotton shirt. Heavy starch will make them last longer. No synthetic clothes, nylon, ployester, etc. They melt.

Leather gloves, welding helmet, safety glasses under the helmet. Will need a grinder, wire brush, chipping hammer, tape measure, soapstone. Check with a local welding shop to see if they will sell you (or give you) some scrap. A box of donuts or two might help grease that skid early in the morning or at morning break.

Soapstone is for marking? I gotta see if welding shops are around. A quick search shows they are all some ways out of where I am.

It only take one time of short sleeves or ant other things list to say I wish I listened.
My self I start with old Goodwill leather coat. It look dress for party but great for welding.

Note it best to start with ⅛" [3mm] or greater thick steel and 0.030 flux core wire.

Welcome! Dang, I wanted to dress up in my chaps, & leather jacket like when I pretended with the real welders, but hey it's hot here, so i'll stick with the denim & green welding jacket.

Breweries use stainless steel as you know and your fluxcore is not up to that task. Enjoy learning to weld other items and maybe work your way to stainless steel. It is a different animal, like aluminum.

Lots to learn here. Read, search, ask questions and post pictures of your projects.

Regular chalkboard chalk will work for starting out. Not sure about princess auto, but if its like a Tractor supply here if it sells welders, it usually has the basic accessories there. You may also be able to purchase small amounts of steel angle and flat stock there too, or Home depot/lowes/Menards. Its not the cheapest per unit price, but you should be able to start practicing with your welder for about $20 dollars to get started. Just keep your eyes open, people are always getting rid of steel, one mans trash is another mans treasure. It can become a curse, you'll be driving down the street and see someone putting out a metal frame on scrap night , and you'll be wondering how you can get it home.

Later did get a real leather welding jacket. The Goodwill jacket only lasted for short time.
I purchased the welding jacket over size to fit over a coat. It was lose fitting for summer witch help with high temperatures.

Return the welder. Get a tig or stick welder capable of tig. Just assuming you will be attempting some brewery welding at some point. Cannot see where fluxcore will benefit you. You can do the sa.e thing with stick as with flux core.

I'm not trying to build breweries. Designing them has my interested in welding altogether. And many parts of a brewery aren't stainless. I don't want to weld stainless, ever. I run around the world instructing people what to build.

This unit is as far as I will ever go. I'm not trying to weld stainless. I don't want a stick welder. The space I don't have for it, is too small for what I already got. I'm not trying to build anything other than light stuff for my office and house. Not a career change.
