POWCON 300sm vs XMT350
I have an xmt 350 that just exploded the capacitors, will cost about 1600 to fix. I found a powcon for sale. I was wondering, are these less expensive to fix than the XMT? I am sort of pissed about how much they want for the IGBTs in it. I dont mind fixing stuff, just getting screwed on the parts sucks. Would I be able to fix a powcon down the line if I buy it?

problem is finding the parts. with powcon, arc products and now arcon all closed nobody has parts. If you search hard and watch cap sizes you might be able to replace the invert caps and output caps before they blow and cause something else to fail.

I did end up buying a 300sm, I found one down the street from me on craigslist for 100 bucks. Not sure if it works, but I have always wanted to mess with one of these machines and they are hard to find. I took the covers off, unfortunately a mouse got inside and chewed on 3 of the CAP wires, so I need to reinsulate them with shrink tubing, considering the mouse was not dead inside I would say that the caps were likely discharged. The caps also look like they are in good shape up top, the lower ones are harder to see. I will keep messing with it and hopefully get it running. The one thing I will say is that the PCBs are mostly in decent shape and they look easy enough to work on that I could ring them out and find any problems. It honestly may work if I just reinsulate the cap wires from the powerboard. It is already set up inside for 220 also. There is one potentiometer on the top of the front board that looks questionable as to whether it is connected, looks like it got bumped or the mouse stepped on it and bent the legs. Its a 64W-503 potentiometer, already found it online for a dollar so I will probably replace it.
Are there schematics for the boards available?

i bought a brand new ln25 after the second time they claimed to quit making them. i waited till there were like only two left in calif, and paid 2100 for it i stored it away in its box, for later yrs. when i went to get it, the mice had made it into a hotel. they used hole for guns end, as a there front door. there piss ate into the galvanizing on the feed rollers arms. amazingly the only ate into one wire. i think there little bodies might just turn into dust after a while, i didnt see any either

$1600 seems like a lot, probably about right for dealer repairs. You could have found an independant repair shop to do it for less, I'd have thought? The IGBTs are £100 each over here (say $300US for the pair)
I used our XMT last night for MIG and once again was blown away by how unbelievably smooth it is. If it dies it will be repaired or replaced like for like, no question... it's that good IMO.

I haven't fixed it yet. The boards are expensive though if any of them are bad. AFAIK there are no diagrams available for them. I ordered a resistor for bleeding capacitors manually yesterday. The caps are 100 a piece aftermarket, so not worried about that. I also have the red-d-arc manual for doing the pre-power checks. I just dont know how to do checks on the IGBTs that is my only problem? Could anyone tell me how to check them? They are not all blown apart or anything on visual insp. from the front of the board at least.

Re: POWCON 300sm vs XMT350
Hi sparky,
While it may not be a definitive "good" or "bad," I can tell you that typically when IGBTs fail, they short. So if any of its pins are shorted (low resistance) to any of its other pins, then it is definitely bad. If not, well, it might be good.
Hope that helps a little. Good luck!
Mike
