It is apples to apples except the 3 prong will drop the neutral.

4 wire is 2 hots a neutral and a ground.

3 wire is just the 2 hots and ground but no neutral.

I rigged the following. Preface, this is for 20 A emergency service off the generator. Got this idea from someone else. I had a second 50 A three prong box that I tied to the 4 prong 20 Nema twist. I braided the chord and tripled the mains to carry well above the 20 A. Works nice. Zero cost.

Again this is only to have a welder or the carbon arc torch during power outages.

I can take a better picture if interested

I went through the same thing with my PTO powered generator, but the 4 prong plug on it wasn't a twistlock. I needed an adapter in a hurry one day to use the buzzbox in the field so I put a 3 prong plugin on a foot of heavy cord with a 4 prong plug in. I've used it numerous times over the years and it's worked well. As mentioned above all you are eliminating is the bare copper ground.... the green, white and black going into your welder cord are still hooked up. I forget offhand whether the white wire goes to the skinny side of the plug or the wide one, but you can usually tell by the color of the screws.

I'm not sure what yer saying here though. There are no bare wires in cords.

He will need the Green Ground wire, Black Hot &
    Red Hot.

The white neutral wire is the one not used

Ahhh.... I used a short chunk of household type wiring because I didn't need it to be flexible.... it was more than 25 yrs ago so my memory might be a little sketchy...

We are dealing with 240 volt here. The white and the black in a SJ feeding a 240 welder doesn't matter which leg you put either one on. You are going to make it confusing when you don't need too. Wider or narrow blade are one in the same here. Two hots and a ground for 240 welder. The only one you need to place correctly is the green ground or if you used ROMEX or SE that one would be bare.
