I haven't. From what I see, the Silver abrasive line are the lower-tier "cubitrons" from 3M. A little cheaper, but not quite as aggressive. I'm sure they're good though. The one I really want to try out is the 982xc Pro Fibre Disc. It is supposed to beat the Cubitron II 982c fibre disc by 33%, and that thing is a beast already!

Interesting... I have one of those fiber backing discs for the light open faced discs we used for body work. I'm wondering if that might be better suited to sheet metal work than prepping or cleaning up after heavy welding.

I'd say it all depends on the aggressiveness/coarseness of the grain.

I've been trying to find some 3M Cubitron II PSA discs for my 12" bench grinder/sander.
Have any of you here seen the 12" discs anywhere?
Not sure if 3M even makes them.

I couldn't find those in Cubitron, only regular aluminum oxide on the 3M website.

Best grinding disk that I've ever used; I was amazed how quickly they removed stock with a 4-1/2" Metabo grinder.

You should see what the 5" Cubitron II disc will do on a true 12,000 RPM grinder.......makes a 4" Cubitron II on a standard ~11,000 RPM grinder seem sloooooow, LOL.

Ouch I can feel the pain.
FYI I do not know a welder that can say it never happened. It is real pain.

I hope you did not wife she will remember that boo boo for ever.
She make remember the pain over and over.

Based on personal experience, I will never own a slide on switch grinder as I am thankful for the paddle switch when I was cutting a fence rail and the grinder jumped and grabbed a finger on my other hand I was holding onto the rail with and jammed my finger between the cutting wheel and edge of the guard. That immediate shut off left me with a scar not a nub.

Beyond that my welding instructor, who was a former iron worker, told us a couple stories involving slide on grinders being left on and running away across the job side to the end of the cord extension . Both cases involved losing power and the guys putting the grinder down forgetting to turn it off. One case was a generator ran out of gas, the other was other workers playing a prank around the corner and unplugging the extension cord.
The moral of the story is plenty of unexpected things can happen and it is human nature to focus on the bigger issue not the grinder on/off switch.

I will also allow that many manufacturers go for cheap and easy and very poorly implement 2-stage switches that you have to practically be a contortionist to operate and hurt to hold on for any period of time. Paddle switchs grinders arent the case though.

Am I the only one who removes the "Safety Tab" on the paddle switch grinders??
I love paddle switches,, I hate fumbling to get the safety tab "rocked over" with heavy gloves on.

I came into the bathroom to clean it up and bandage but in the time it took to walk in from outside it made a pretty bloody mess. My wife happened to be in there and when she saw all the blood and then all the blood with the water added, geez oh Pete, I had a second emergency to deal with, with the screaming and crying and general hysterics. Had to get the blood under control then deal with the traumatized wife. If only there was video, she could have won a daytime Emmy … luckily the more memorable part of this debacle was me falling into the pool with a running chainsaw shortly after I took the tree down that bent the fence
