Power iMIG 230i 120v
I have iMIG 230i and currently only have 3300/3650 watt, 120v 30 amp >3% clean power generator, will be getting 11000 watt 240v >5% generator.
But for now can the 230i run on 120v 30 amp?
If so how thick of steel can it weld on 120v?
If I understand it correctly the 230i will run on 120v, but wanted to be sure the 3300/3650 watt 120v 30 amp generator is ok to use for now, don’t want to damage my new machine!
:-)
Cheers, Allen

It'll need every bit of 3600 watts.

Re: Power iMIG 230i 120v
If it’s not a good idea to use this small of a generator, I’ll not take a chance of damaging my iMIG 230.
If it will work and not harm the welder, can it weld ⅛”?

Re: Power iMIG 230i 120v
If your generator is ok and in good shape, it won't be a problem as long as you don't max it out. It should weld 1/8". If your generator starts to load up significantly, stop though. Simple as that, as long as it is clean power rated. Is this an inverter type? (Also don't use it on ECO idle).

Re: Power iMIG 230i 120v
It is almost new Firman inverter generator, has switch to turn off eco weld.
I’m going to get a Westinghouse WPro 8500/11000 watt >5% THD clean power 240v 35 amp running and 48 amp surge when they are available. They have been out of stock for while.

Re: Power iMIG 230i 120v
Just keep that welder's power to running in 120 volts for now. And don't go greater than 110 amps max, when plugged into your generator's 30-amp 120v outlet. So, yes, you are good for roughly 1/8"-thick steel (~11-gauge). And I second on what Lugwelder states about switching off the ECO-mode. My .02 cents. I like lots of safety margin, whenever I use a generator to run a welder. (My lightweight/portable welder, for small jobs, is a Harbor Freight Titanium 125 Amp fluxcore welder, which I sometimes use at a maximum 115 amps when hooked into a 3800-watt WEN generator's 120v, 30-amp outlet. It works flawlessly.)
