Navy Seal/FDNY class gift from original World Trade Center Steel.

Quick Reference: 343 FDNY firefighters were killed on the initial 9/11 attack.

This piece is a gift from the FDNY to Navy Seal academy class 343, which graduated this month almost exactly 20 years after the attacks.

It is now on display at the entrance to the seal training school.

Base plate is 5/8" steel cut from the center of huge I-Beam. The jagged cut across its face was made by hand during the recovery efforts so it was left as a live edge.

The 343 and towers themselves are 7/16" thick also cut from the web of a large beam.

It was designed in fusion 360 and all the parts were CNC plasma cut. They were TIG welded to avoid spatter together which was a disaster with how filthy the material is. We did not want to ruin the original patina as it has stood for the last 20 years. The tungsten was basically exploding on each bead but it ended up working out.

The extra material was used to make the crosses to give to families who lost loved ones either in the attack or the military following it.

Definitely the most memorable piece I've ever gotten a chance to make. All in from planning and design to acquiring steel to cutting and welding it was around 30 hours of work.

Great piece of historical art right there.

The live edge seems to really draw me in emotionally, humanizing it entirely. Thinking of who cut it, how they felt, if they survived, everything.

Beautiful piece born from such ugliness.

It was not me. I only got into metalwork 7 or 8 years ago.

I work for the fire department we have a formerly large now small stockpile of the steel.
