Interesting video on cut off wheels
Looks like I have been using the wrong technique frequently.
When I cut thicker materials the problems shown when using a wheel like a circular saw are noticeable. I thought they seemed to last longer when used in a scoring motion.

Re: Interesting video on cut off wheels
I saw that video today. I always thought it was common knowledge to use the " scoring" technique. I knew there would be better disc life scoring vs plunging but couldn't believe it was that much.

Re: Interesting video on cut off wheels
Just watched the video and it answered a few questions I've had over the years.
I usually do the gouging technique just to establish my line and give me something to follow. It was just natural to keep gouging since I didn't like how the blade would grab and kick if I really buried it in the material. I never really paid any attention to how fast the blades wore down, though. Seeing him get a 10x increase in number of cuts, well that's substantial!
I wonder if it holds true when cutting thicker material.

Re: Interesting video on cut off wheels
I stopped watching when he tried the "better" method.. It's sort of like what's the big secret? Think of when you're dressing a a buffing wheel. What cleans faster, "cutting" into it with whatever you're using or placing a flat side almost parallel to it? I can see how he would want to stretch his wheels out, since he's cutting a lot of super thin stuff that's better suited for a plasma.
I figure they're called cut-off wheels for a reason. Not cutting wheels or metal ripping wheels...
Prep work takes long enough, I value my time spent on measuring and fit up more than making wheels last longer. That's what plasma is for.

He probably sells the sawhorses This dood is a marketing troll.
First time you plunge cut with a grinder, and the wheel blows up, gets ripped, or the grinder takes off for the hills.......................you learn to score the cut.

Re: Interesting video on cut off wheels
I like the video because it can be used to show newer welders or fabricators a clear example of how one technique allows the discs to last longer. While there are plenty of hacks on YouTube (including myself), there are plenty of good instructional videos on nearly any topic.
Don't forget that we frequently have newer members on here who have not been welding or fabricating for decades. A quick look to the lower left of your screen shows we also have many more lurkers or guests viewing these threads. The pic below was just taken as a screen capture. There are only 45 members and 670 more people looking. If some of them learn something useful, then great.
I like the way Don52 makes threads detailing his work since I can learn something from them and then go back and reference the thread. The same for the way Sam does his machining posts. Now, I will also say I am not a fan of the way Sam lets his equipment get to that point of failure and then spends months coming up with an elaborate and ultimately more time consuming and costly repair. But to each his own. His technique works for him. Mine for me.

Absolutely correct and a big oversight on his part.
I have had pieces dug out of my eye several times. Pieces flying in the air or ricocheting got around the glasses.
I am also using this type of mask right now grinding on tanks to make bells.

Re: Interesting video on cut off wheels
I think he actually told the TRUE difference between the two,, vibration.
HECK,, vibration and allowing the work piece to move will destroy ANY tool.
Drill holes with a drill press. Try to drill a 1" hole in a 1/2" piece of steel, even when holding it with a good vise,
You are lucky to drill one hole before dulling a high speed drill.
I purchased an antique jig borer for hole drilling,, that machine was so rigid that literally we could drill over 1,000 holes with a 1" high speed bit before needing to sharpen the bit.
The jig borer was simply a drill press,, but, it weighed close to 10,000 pounds,, not a home drill press.
We had a radial drill,, it could drill 300 or so holes before sharpening was needed, that machine weighed 3,000 pounds.
The same is true for milling cutters, and ANY other tool.
I would bet if the part being cut was held rigidly, and the same per square inch pressure was applied to the wheel, there would be WAY less difference in the number of cuts.
BUT, then,, no one would post the video in forums,,

Re: Interesting video on cut off wheels
SweetMK has the absolute correct info.
The guy has a company and is technically a shill, but I don't find his videos to be a commercial in that way. I quite enjoy them.
I did find it funny that he made an unbeatable vise and then started selling a COMPLETELY DIFFERENT vise (same color?).

Re: Interesting video on cut off wheels
It's a full face respirator, and they are great for protection as they seal out EVERYTHING. No chance of eye injury with something like that on. The biggest downside (other than cost) is that if you need prescription glasses to see, they are more difficult. There are kits required to be available by each manufacturer, but they can be pretty spendy to get and then get your prescription fitted into. But any optometrist can do it.
The most common full face people see is in the movies/TV - what firefighters wear but there are a lot more out there for industrial use. The guys who spray foamed my house wore them.

One disadvantage/consideration of these types of masks is whether you are clean shaven or not.
I had about a weeks worth of facial hair yesterday. Due to that, the mask did not create a completely air tight seal. I was still picking black stuff out of my nose after grinding a bunch of tanks yesterday.
A PAPR is best if you have face hair.

Re: Interesting video on cut off wheels
And ya know.... to be completely honest, I cut a lot of thin stuff with the grinder because I'm too lazy to use the plasma... And.. next time I will remember this video!

In an OSHA setting, being clean shaven is required for using a tight-fitting mask like this. It is so ingrained into me, that i don't always think to mention it...thanks. Facial hair, even day or two stubble can really hurt the seal you get with these types of rubber masks. Just part of the drill...

I haven't been completely clean shaven in years. I usually use a set of clippers without a guard every 10-14 days or so.
I have been fit tested before at work for these masks so know the requirements. Complying with them at home is a different story sometimes.

Re: Interesting video on cut off wheels
I saw that video the other day when it popped up in my subscribed video content creators. I learned how to save a lot of money when it comes to cut off wheels. Here I thought I was just being too cheap with what brand cut off wheels I purchased.
Lincoln, ESAB, Thermal Dynamics, Victor, Miller, Dewalt, Makita, Kalamzoo. Hand tools, power tools, welding and cutting tools.

Let me see if I can do this right.
Yeah, me and my Authorized Dealer are on a first name basis. Even though I hate dealing with him in person.

Re: Interesting video on cut off wheels
With a cost of $6.00
Cut times of 13s vs 32 s = cuts/hr 276.9/hr vs 112.5/hr
Disc life 6 cuts vs 61 = $/cut $1.00 vs $0.098
The cost of a cut coverges at $1.61.8 per cut at $171 per hr for wages
At any lower labour cost rate ,cost of cut is still higher with fast cut technique.
Higher hourly rate than I first thought ....
A good guess is better than a bad measurement
