From what I understand you will lose too much torque at the lower speeds.

Lots of people have used these motors for drill presses and bandsaws. I have yet to see anyone say anything bad about them.

Best of luck but I think it may work okay on light duty drilling for woodworking etc. but very much doubt it will have the torque to drill steel at low speeds.

There's also a good chance no one has said "anything bad about them"
because they are so frustrated, embarrassed and out of cuss words that they put it behind them.

I think this happened to a friend once or twice .....LOL

Did you use the speed controls from the corresponding treadmills or build your own from scratch? What kind of spindle speeds are you running and how is the torque from a 3/4 hp motor at low speeds? I was wondering if you would still need to gear down the belt drives and run the variable speeds on the motor in a higher range...

I cant recall your situation. You do have 3 phase power don’t you?

If not, surely you should be able to find a used heavy duty 3 phase machine and add a VFD or phase converter.

Then you wouldn’t be d*cking around like I did for so many years.


Edit. Or maybe buy a mag drill and fixture it so that you can use on your heavy welding table.

Just single phase here. I geared down my press with the belts/pulleys and a 1/2 HP 1725 motor. I need to fix the belt tensioner better... right now the belt slips long before the motor powers out with the big bits.

usiing a 2 1/2 inch hole saw...forgot had my gloves on...

hole saw grabbed my glove....trip to emergency room...10 stiches on smaller finger...

so i guess its got enough torque

never change belt pulleys anymore

rpm range... about 50 up to 1,000

good enough for me

I just ordered this controller. I've been told that the terminals on the back that are labeled "PW" are for an emergency stop switch. Is this correct?

I finally got around to getting the motor out of the old treadmill. As I've been reading and watching various how-to videos for controllers - one thing keeps popping up:

They all seem to us an AC controller, then the bridge rectifier, and wired that to the motor.

I'd like to have the 120V wall power go to a bridge rectifier, then the DC into a DC PWM controller, and on to the DC motor. The many reviews and boards seem to indicate the PWM is superior to a "SCR" controller.

If that's doable - the next question is:



My motor is tagged for 130VDC, all the controllers I can find only seem to go up to 90VDC. I can get ones with plenty of amps and watts - but am curious what degradation in performance (if any) would possibly result from the lower voltage. (I've used to W to A, etc calculators but the expected end results still confuse me a bit.)

EDIT: Just came across a discussion regarding PWM's - the "FILTERED" ones can go to 130VDC, unfiltered limit out at 90VDC. I'm still searching, but this brought up another question: Is/would a "CHOKE" act as a filter? I'm trying to figure out if they do more than help with audio noise issues.

56 years young and still learning...

After lots more reading I have a MC-60 motor controller coming that does it all: AC to DC conversion and 130VDC max output (same boards that run treadmills), and a 5K linear potentiometer. Those two items should get me into the testing stage at least. If that works out, then it'll be taking out the soft start circuit, and getting it into a project box.
