I've got a yard full of 1/2"minus landscape rock - I'll be giving it a roll too.

I'm 4.5 hours into a sand filled session with the two hooks. Just got back from some bacon wrapped shrimp and margaritas ro check on it.

Not too bad - the one I stripped much of the paint off only has a few small places to be 100%, the one I threw in without any stripping is 75% of the way there.

Bucket is holding up well, as is the rest of machine. I'm going to get a kick out of this thing,

This is really fascinating. Thanks for sharing. I’ve never had the need to tumble anything big. But I did use a small rock tumbler to clean some cabinet hardware on a Hoosier cabinet that I refinished. It worked awesome. I soaked the parts in vinegar for a few days to remove most of the paint. Then experimented with sand, rice, and even grits as the tumbling media. It was a lot of fun. So I can relate- even if not on the same scale as what you are doing.

I don't think we have grits in AZ!

Found 25lbs of 5/8" pyramid ceramic for $40 on fleabay. Looking forward to trying it.

You're a lucky man. It's Cream O' Wheat or nothing, imo.

I forget who I was talking to, but they did away with the paddles on the inside of their cylindrical tumbler. They found that gravity did well enough on its own since they were putting such odd chunks in the tumbler. The upside was that it quieted the tumbler significantly.

That and having the inside/outside professionally coated with Line-X or Rhino Liner.

Don't forget to use old nuts and bolts and off-cuts as your media. Every type of media will give you a different look and a different speed of work. I've got a bunch of scrap here I could send your way.....

I would bet that 1/8" welding rod "stubs" would make great media,,

They sell stainless steel pins for media,, which is used for shooting brass,, I believe,,

Surely, the welding rod stubs would be like "supersized" pins,,

Oh I'm good on scraps - with all the do-overs I have to do - pahlenty! Appreciate the offer.

Interesting - what about tig rods? HF has tons of them for cheap (sensing a theme with my thriftiness yet!).

It would be interesting to see the price and size of the stainless pins you are referring to.

Then compare that to making your own pins using 1/16, 3/32, and 1/8 Stainless tig rod.
When you cut the rod with snips, you have relatively sharp ends.

I had two sand blasters, suction, and pressure,,
The Black Beauty would not work in either, the particles were too large to get through the nozzle,,
I would imagine it comes in different sizes, I am not knocking it for sand blasting.

It was VERY interesting for tumbling,,

Anyone live near a steel mill,, you could get some cinders/slag,, and be set for a lifetime of tumbling,,

Would you believe a hiking trail in Sedona? Parents, kids, and us. As other hikers came by they'd stop, watch a little and move along. Perfect day.

Our wedding was in my in-laws back yard,, My wife and I wanted a small wedding,,
My MIL INSISTED that LOTS of people would be invited,,
She said that she had given gifts to ALL of these peoples children's weddings,, SHE WANTED THE GIFTS TO BE PAID BACK!!

My wife and I hoped for rain, we wanted a quick ceremony,,
it did not rain, My MIL got her wish,, big crowd, LOTS of gifts,, VERY LONG ceremony,,
My MIL did arrange good food,, as good food goes in the south,, (the middle of VA)
    It was no "Pittsburgh" wedding!!

    Re: Parts Tumbler Anyone :-)

We used angular steel shot for tumbling small parts. If there is a foundry near you, you might be able to convince them to sell you a bag. Our small tumbler had a few bars riveted to the sides of the drum about 1/4 inch high. We can tilt the drum to achieve the angle we needed. We also threw a few hardened iron bars(actually gates and runners of the same hard material we were cleaning) into the drum to create some impact. The parts weighed about 1 ounce each. An example of angular shot is in the link:https://www.wabrasives.com/en/standa...eparation.html

    Re: Parts Tumbler Anyone :-)

We use a HF concrete mixer, with the paddles removed and have welded in a octagon for the tumble action (and provide another wear layer.)

Initially we tried some garnet but it just made a bunch of dust.

We just use the action of parts hitting each other and whatever other small bits of steel. We sheared up a bunch of 1/2" round rod for a job and probably have 100 1" pcs in there.

It does an awesome job. We don't have to deslag or grind any small plasma cut parts anymore.

It is very loud. We made a sheet metal lid for it but most of the time it runs outside.
