But why? If you're turning a new nut to suit the new shaft thread, you make one first, and how ever it turns out, you make the other to suit it.
So if you make the nut first, you can then turn the shaft to suit the new nut.
No plug gauge required... no thread calipers or nothing else either for that matter. You can use 90% depth of cut and 10% eyeball it. Then do the 90% depth of cut on the shaft and 10% trial fit the nut.
it isn't bodgery if it works....
