I plan on building a dryer out of pipe and drain valves similar to the one in the video below, and then downstream i can add one of those silica jell filters like you use. I used one of these pipe style dryers at a shop i use to work at, it can trap a lot of water before it gets to the other filter. This guy in the video uses water separators at the bottom of the pipe but the one i used simply had drain valves at the bottom of each pipe that you could open up to drain the system.

by the time you pay for all those filter and copper pipe you may as well buy a Refrigeration type dryer. I bought one plumbed it into the system, never powered it on.

Not quite. The copper will be much cheaper than one of those dryers. I thought about using pex tubing instead of copper but i don't know if that will work the same as metal pipe.

I figure it would cost about $150 for the pipe, fittings, and valves. If you added water separators instead of valves the price would be much higher depending on the particular filter units.

    Re: Plasma cutting table question.

Black iron pipe is cheaper than copper. All of those water separators in the post #28 video are wasted money. If the water separator separates out the water, what does he think the ones after the first one are doing? Just need one at the tool hookup. A drain at each leg may be unnecessary...People are saying that almost everything is caught at the first drain, a wee bit at the second drain, and nothing at subsequent drains. An aftercooler after the compressor and before the tank is a good idea...It cools the air, removes a lot of the water, and reduces tank rust..

The older Miller plasma torches were far from great (really far actually) so comparing one as if it's the same as a newer much improved Miller plasma doesn't wash. Just get a water separator with either a spin on filter or a Motor guard filter that uses a cartridge. The Motor Guard can even use a roll of toilet paper in a pinch. Consumables that are less cost but you go through a lot more is not saving money.

I use this right at the plasma cutter. I also have a cheap water separator from HD right at the compressor. It works ok not the best solution but I get by. I really like the idea acourtjesture uses with desiccant beads but kitty litter beads to save money. The Motor Guard is a must though IMO.

lol, you have a point. You could use a cheap toaster oven. Ive seen bladesmiths use them for tempering blades.

Yes you can recycle the kitty litter, I also use in a dry box for 3-D printer filament, Ebay sells these little battery powered humidity indicators I put one in the storage box so I can see if the stuff is good.

I had an aunt that refused to buy recycled toilet paper. She told me, "There's some things you just shouldn't recycle."

Motor guard filters can be dried out and reused. just get a couple of them and cycle them. You don't want to leave a wet filter in the housing for a long time.
A wet filter will cause the paint to fail and the housing to make AL dust.
I open my filter at the end of the day and let it dry. Filters can be reused until they fill up with oil or start falling apart.

The technical term is "they work until they don't".

    Plasma cutting table question.

I have a homemade unit on my Atlas Copco that works extremely well but I don't recommend it and would not do it again.

Should have bought a refrigerated dryer.

That compressor looks like a beast. What's the oil thing on the top for? I would assume its to add oil to the compressor but why is it so big?

    Oil yes.

This is the beast I sold.

I would have to rob the piggy bank for oil changes. $500 /20 litre pail for synthetic oil. (Aprx a pail and a half per change.)
