    Dumbbell rack

Finished this up on Sunday. Trash project from scrap. Uprights were salvaged from old treadmill and rails were the center bar from the garage door rebuild. Center bar is T-channel and very high carbon. The tacks kept cracking after cooling. Welding was tricky due to 0.1” thickness so I could not linger. 6013 3/32” rod around 90 A with many button welds to build a web.

Here it is prior to paint and caps. Pretty stable on concrete. Carpet less so.

Needed close outs for the ends. Opted to make from scrap treated lumber. Dato milled to fit flush inside the tubes. I’m a little disappointed with these but they fit well without binding.

Placed in service. Very nice to use these off the rack as opposed to the floor.

    Great looking project.

I could not see the "T" shaped material in the project,, I only saw the rect tube, and angle ,,,

Probably,, if it is high carbon steel, a different rod like 7018 should be used.

Something as simple as a rack ,, 6013 may not matter, but,, the cracking you ran into is expected,, and failure is possible.

Thanks MK. It was a few tacks after clamping and straining. It’s shored up nicely after full welds. This T channel is extremely hard and full of carbon. I don’t expect and future failures. I wouldn’t make a trailer out of the stuff though.

    Regards.

Nice work. The wood caps is a nice touch.

I made my own about 30 years ago. Haven’t broken it yet. Lol

Made this one for kettlebells more recently..

Man, I wish I had you as a neighbor.

I used to design strength equipment for a living.

I still have crazy design ideas all the time but right now I am an apartment dweller in Honolulu with no workshop since that suits our family situation better (wife is a doctor working night shifts nearby).

I’m still amazed how little adjustment for different body sizes there is in all types of gym equipment.

Exactly!!! This is why purists insist the use of free weights are superior to machines.

Machines have their place and advantages but the homeowner “one size fits all” designs do more harm than good.

Of course higher end machines have more provision for accommodating different body types but you require a degree to set it up properly for each different user.

Tee bar row machine that I built that fits “me”….

Kinda reminds me of the 80s Icarian T Bar very nice.

I have been toying around for years with hammer strength type pieces with adjustable convergent angles and with carriages where you sit that slide forwards and backwards for different torso depths. Not to mention adjustable angle back rests and even different width back pads that can but inserted in and out easily. The cost would be extreme though of course. Kind of thing only NFL teams would probably pay for.

Lis, very nice builds. I like the orange paint inside the tubes. Nice contrast. I had roughed a T bar years back. It’s a great station to make. Getting ideas to incorporate the lever at the new dumbbell rack since it’s a nice weighted pivot. Tube pivot where I could lock in the empty bar. I’ve more work to do. Off picture is my trash weight rack which was my first welding project ever at age 17. It’s pretty sad and I look at it now as a mother would an ugly child. It’s next up for a tuneup.
