How healthy it is to weld cast iron cookware?

    Hello.

I was wondering how healthy it is to repair weld cast iron cookware and cook with it.
Could harmful elements from the weld metal end up in the food?
Is seasoning 100% effective to prevent contamination?
I did some Googling, but I didn't find something useful.

Should be fine. I've repaired cast iron tongs, several cauldrons and skillets. I prefer brazing with a 10% Ni Balance Silver brazing rod although there are at least a dozen different ways to do it. Good Luck !

If you have tig or torch just weld with cast iron rod.
Note: Per heat the part be for welding or may crack.

Here's the chemical composition of the stuff. I guess you gotta judge what you want in your stomach

https://www.harrisproductsgroup.com/...e-15-BARE.aspx Click on "technical" information for the composition of the alloy.

Cast iron rods are probable the best since they are similar to the casting without nickel.
I never used TIG with oxyfuel rods, It would be an interesting experience...
I bet you need pretty high preheating.

People cook in aluminum pots every day,, that has to be worse than anything you can weld,,,,,,,,

OTOH,, NOTHING is 100%,, as the OP asked,, so,,,,,,,,,,, You gotta take your risks in life,,

OH,, yea,, WELDING the cast iron will probably expose you to worse fumes than cooking in cast iron,,
so,, get someone you do not know to do the welding,, and pay them well,,,

My Scottish ancestry likes the save, but I'm also wondering if some of the repair procedures suggested wouldn't cost more than a lot of cast iron cookware is worth... not to mention everyone will see your patched job.

I'm not a fan of plain old bronze brazing rod for this application due to it's difference in expansion and contraction compared to the cast. Folks do it though.
