    It triggers the darkening through the welder and the pedal before the arc is generated. Solar helmets only darken once the arc is up, hence your eyes already got hit for a few milliseconds. Being exposed to the arc every now and then for a very short time isn't a huge risk, but welding regularly with a helmet that only responds to the arc with a delay, like all solar helmets, will have an impact on your eyes eventually.
