I used to have a dry erase board screwed to the back of the shop door to keep track of vehicle maint then I went to individual maint books for each vehicle. The dry erase board does help though as you see it every day, the books you have to remember to check.

I changed one the other day, after a bit of deliberation decided it made no sense to have 3 new on the shelf and a 10 yr old one on the tractor but,,, our fuel is very clean.

You would be so proud of me. I used to (literally) have a small room full of filters.

Damn truck air filters take up the most room.

Each machine sold complete with service manuals, service record book, spare parts and filters.

As of summer 2020 I am down to this.....

Maybe $10 worth on a good day. LOL

I also dont stock what we did and buy just in time mostly. We finally got a real local good auto parts which helped a lot. Lower use, extended changes, we dont even buy bulk oil anymore.

In the “old days” we ran Ford farm tractors exclusively and Ford had a program where they provided a large metal cabinet and the dealer would keep it stocked with OEM filters.

We never had to pay for filters until they were taken out of inventory.

One of the automotive jobbers did a complete survey of rolling stock including personal passenger cars for all consumables to make it easy for our mechanic to do servicing.

    Updates were done yearly.

Included part numbers for wipers, rad hoses, filters, and bulbs for each vehicle.

Pretty impressive as this was way before we had computers and for the fact that we weren’t even a large farm by any means.

I think I used a couple tractor filters last year and 2 or 3 cars maybe. I dont have the constant rebuilding any more and such a MyGyver I can come up with a lot of stuff others got to run to the store over and I been trying to use out as much old stock as I can. I have a dew widgets for the common problems with a couple boxes of remnants I pick thru.

Last night I was changing the oil on all three of the Ford rangers in my fleet. All 4.0s two SOHC and one OHV, the ohv is new to me. I have a case of oil filters for the SOHC engines, I assumed the OHV was the same. Nope, not even close, for some reason I had an exact replacement for that one sitting on the shelf too, not sure where it came form, maybe the mustang.

Really impressed the wife when I went into the garage and pulled out the exact correct part, new in box, and she though I have too much junk in the garage. "what do you need all these car parts for?"
