I am back to smaller truck. Modern tools have changed the way we do stuff, very rarely do I have to fix something of my own that takes a heavy truck. I have a crane on a flat bed. I was going too put one on the serv truck but I really font need it anymore.
Love the umbrella. lol

I was sort of semi retired and need to start over a little and am going back to a bit of contracting. Its rather inticte in some ways but one thing about that biz if a guy is willing to branch out or sow some seeds is its such a huge world that you can start over so to speak. When you are starting there is always the worst and the best and it usually falls in between. I try not to spend money I havnt earned. The worse most thing doesnt happen is its not the best,,, so you dont make as much money on every job as you hope, you got to be willing to work extra to fix your mistakes and then do it more better on the next job.
I hate to be a clawback guy for extras especially if its not a deal killer and charge for it up front. I relize there is money to be made on materials and there is/becomes the right place for it but a lot of sincere people are willing to simply write up a check for the stuff and a couple of mine gottem accounts at the vendors we all use so it doesnt just pass thru my hands, not worth the effort and we deal with the labor and get a little markup with the left overs and the drops etc. On smaller jobs when no one watching close I got no problem adding 5$ for a grinding wheel or 10$ for some rods. Its just a nick but everyone shares a little when I add a tube of silicone or box of wire nuts to the bill.
I understand line item but in my world its not worth it and no one cares and I actually make a deliberate pitch that they get real labor service and never a parts sale, every service call doesnt involve a list of parts. We got keys to their shop, they bought some bolts even for stock and a few parts and we didnt even have to go to local store, didnt leave till it was fixed, found enuf on the job, didnt have to be a sales tax collector. Eventually you can do that but its added pressure on start up unless there is a lot of incentive.
My 99 E350 is a little I moved down to a f150 long bed and modern conveniences. Love the gas mileage. Hate working out of the bed of a truck with a utility topper. Hate it. Currently working on a bed slide.
The e350 is scheduled for diagnosis, then surgery over the holidays.
A good umbrella works great in the rain or sunshine .
FYI All my welding was outside so umbrella was the indoors for me.
In retirement I use a Carport that has concrete happy days

Yes they do!
I get it, it is what I do. But my umbrella is a boring yellow on. lol
When I'm indoors and it's 100 plus out side I use it for the welder to keep it from going into "auto idle override".

Thanks, Kind of an old pic, the gang box up front has been replaced by an air compressor now.

I interview a young man a couple weeks ago for part time and training. 20yrs old. Told him to research welder helper and talk to folk about stuff to consider for a wage consideration. He came back a week later. Said he needed 30/hr. Went through his rationale... Basically since helpers earn 5 to 600 per week and he works part time then he needs 30 per hour to compensate for the minimal hours. He's on vacation part of this week?
Not sure how long he will be with me, but good young man, truly a blank slate.

I assume YOU would dictate the days/hours and it would always be a 4 hour minimum shift?
Most welders that I new did not charge 4 hours but did charge one way trave time.
The Fresno county can take hours to drive to job site so workout to 3 or 4 hours in end.
It just customers in Fresno would not pay min of 4 hours but would pay Oneway trave.

Dave the 4 hour minimum I was referring to was the shift for the helper.

I was not sure where to post this. Under funny things or business forum? He will not make 30/hrs. Though if he works minimal shift, that is like a raise. Had a guy do that.
My point with him was just consider his needs from a job, before just taking a job. This young man has never had a job.
That is the problem with helpers.
They need 30 hours or more of work each week.
It best to do all work your self if possible.
They also have companies that have temp works where they charge with minimum numbers hours each day. Cost more but only need a helper a few day each month it is a option. It can save money in long run and less paperwork.
The biggest down side of having a helper is OSHA they are a real pain.
